3.2 | Safety instructions
WARNING!
Danger for children!
• The product comes in packaging which should be kept out of the reach of
children to avoid the danger of swallowing and choking or suffocation.
• Do not allow children to play with the heat wrap tape. There is a risk of
strangulation
CAUTION!
Risk of injury!
• When installing the product, ensure that the vehicle cannot topple over and that
the workplace is well lit
• Although the heat wrap tape does lower the exterior temperature of the header
pipe, and therefore protects against accidental contact burns, the insulating
effect is by no means total, so care is always required!
NOTE!
Risk of damage!
• If the tape is used to wrap chrome exhaust components, the resulting increase
in the interior temperature may cause permanent discolouration.
• The change in the thermal behaviour and resonance in the exhaust may
cause the carburettor to need readjusting. In extreme cases, or when other
components are also involved, the jets may have to be changed..
• If used incorrectly (e.g. if the temperature exceeds 750°C for long periods),
residues can also be left on the wrapped components, and these can be difficult
to remove.
• Exhaust headers wrapped with heat wrap tape may cause the engine to reach
operating temperature more quickly. Air-cooled engines may run somewhat hotter
than before.
• Heat wrap tape is made of a glass fibre composite material whose fine fibres
may cause skin irritation, rather like rockwool, so you should protect yourself
against skin contact, e.g. by wearing rubber gloves and work clothes (overalls).
Newly applied heat wrap tape will smoke and smell a bit when you first ride your
motorcycle – this does not impair the performance of the material, and soon
fades away
4 | Installation
1. It is best to apply the heat wrap tape to a cold header that has been taken off the engine, as
otherwise you will have to pull the full length of tape through the gap between the header and the
engine or other narrow spaces for every turn of the winding. The smaller the gap, the more difficult
it is to fit. The header must be clean and any rust removed before applying the heat wrap tape. It is
advisable to re-coat a used header to ensure that rust will not develop undetected under the heat wrap
tape. Winding the tape around the header will be easier if you soak the tape in water to make it more
pliable and stretchy, and also to prevent it from slipping. The disadvantage of applying the tape wet
10
is that a lot of colour bleeds out, so you should wear gloves and work clothes. The tape can also be
applied dry, but you will get a better result if you wet it because the tape shrinks as it dries, giving a
tight fit around the header.
2. Now cut off the start of the tape with scissors (adhesive strip may burn and leave residues). With
one hand, place the tape around the header as closely as possible, and use your other hand to start
winding as tightly as you can. On motorbikes whose cylinder head and headers become very hot, such
as classic bikes with cast iron cylinder heads, it may be best to begin winding a few centimetres below
the header flange. Overlap the tape as uniformly as possible by about 50% with each turn (different
overlaps will be inevitable at bends). Tuck the tape in once at the end, and fasten it with a stainless-
steel cable tie or, failing that, with wire. It's not essential to fasten the upper end, if you prefer not to
for reasons of appearance, but we do recommend permanent fastening here too with a stainless-steel
cable tie, or with wire. Make sure that there is no risk of injury from open ends of the stainless-steel
cable tie or wire.
5 | Storage
Until you are ready to use it, the heat wrap tape should be kept in its original packaging and stored in a
dry place.
6 | Cleaning and care
Use a damp cloth to remove dirt from heat-wrapped headers.
7 | Warranty
This heat wrap tape comes with the statutory two-year warranty. The warranty period begins on the
date of purchase. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, use for anything other than the
intended purpose, or damage caused by an accident or tampering.
8 | Disposal
Dispose of packaging and the product itself in compliance with regional regulations.
