5XM and 5XL HIGH PRESSURE MECHANICAL VICES with
A.- Operation of the vice.
The 5X high pressure vice is operated by turning the handle clockwise. It is equipped with a high power
mechanical spindle with a pressure intensifier and a pressure regulator.
Before starting to turn the handle and bearing in mind the characteristics of the work pieces that are to
be clamped (type of material, operation to be carried out, etc.), the clamping pressure can be adjusted as
desired.
To do so, the crank/handle must be placed in position and then, rotate the vernier to the number/pressure
required.
Now the handle may be turned until the moveable jaw reaches the work piece. When a slight "threshold"
pressure is experienced, continue turning the handle until a click is heard. This indicates that the clutch is
operating and the high pressure clamping takes place.
Once movement comes to a stop, do not continue turning the handle as this will not produce more pressure
and may damage the vice or the pressure control.
To unclamp the work piece, turn the handle anticlockwise until the clutch is heard to click again.
The pressure intensifier assembly and the clutch assembly are situated at the rear, next to the spindle
mounting plate (end clamp).
The high pressure mechanical spindle is a compact assembly and easy to replace with a new one should
this be necessary.
B.- Cleaning.
For complete and efficient functioning of the vice, it is essential to make sure that the interior of the vice is
totally clean at all times.
To avoid interference from swarf and shavings, the spindle is protected by a metal spiral in the front and
metal plates in the rear.
For complete cleaning, remove the four screws from the clamp/flange (handle end). The spindle is loose
and can be taken out together with the spindle shoe and moveable jaw. Now the inside of the main body is
free for cleaning.
For good maintenance, please use top quality coolants only and anti-oxidizing agents.
C.- Instructions for disconnecting the spindle from the vice.
1. Remove the four screws that attach the moveable jaw (5036/2) to the spindle shoe (5410). Remove
the jaw.
2. Remove the four screws (1051), which attach the end clamp of the spindle (1014) to the main body.
3. Pull out the spindle and spindle shoe assembly.
4. Secure the assembly to a bench vice by the spindle shoe.
5. Place the crank-handle in position and secure it to prevent it from turning. Remove the turning stop
screw (1231) from the other end, using an Allen wrench. When this screw is loose, the turning stop
(1228) comes out and the spiral guide (1045) tends to expand. To prevent the spiral guide from opening,
remove it as compacted as possible and keep it closed with a string or wire.
6. Unscrew the spindle from the shoe.

D.- Maintenance of the high pressure mechanical spindle with pressure regulator.
If for any reason the pressure of the spindle decreases, dismount it and clean it thoroughly. The spindle
is physically and functionally divided into two different parts: on the one hand, the pressure intensifier
assembly and on the other, the clutch regulator assembly.
