greater quantity of nebulised medicine and
particles at the ideal size for treatment of
the entire respiratory tract.
Sidestream uses the exclusive Diamond Jet
technology, guaranteeing a more uniform
nebulisation: in fact, the medicine crosses
through 4 channels independent of the air
flow channel. This avoids premature neb-
ulisation within the tubes (12).
The Sidestream nebulizer cup features
the unique Venturi Double Effect, where
air enters the nebulizer cup from the bot-
tom (compressed air) - like conventional
nebulizer cups, as well as from the top.
The additional air flow from outside the
nebulizer cup combined with the air flow
from the compressor conveys even more
particles to the lungs (13).
At the nebulizer cup summit, the medicine
is nebulised by the air produced by the
compressor and air drawn from outside.
A central deflector creates two currents
of nebulised air, which hit the nebulizer
cup walls. This impact causes the largest
particles to drop to the nebulizer cup floor
and reinitiate the cycle, while those with
a suitable dimension leave the nebulizer
cup and are breathed in by the patient.
This particular technology significantly in-
creases particles flow and reduces therapy
time, which has a critical impact on the
treatment's efficiency and its acceptance.

EFFECTIVENESS
The special configuration of Sidestream
enables medicine to penetrate the res-
piratory tracts more easily, thanks to the
optimal size of nebulised aerosol particles.
With the Sidestream nebulizer cup, 80% of
particles are smaller than 5 micron (from 1
to 5 micron) and can reach and deposit in
the lower airways, while particle size in tra-
ditional nebulizer cups varies, so only 50%
of particles reaches the lower airways.

NEBULISATION RATE
The design of the Sidestream nebulizer
cup also reduces treatment length, with
medicine administered quickly and ef-
fectively. As the table shows, Sidestream
nebulises the same amount of medicine
as a traditional chamber in half the time.
