2. Check the torque of the blade mounting bolts (A,
Figure 22). As necessary, torque to 30 to 40 ft. lbs. 
3. Check the blade for sharpness, wear and damage.
See Blade Wear Limits.

Mower Blade Replacement
WARNING
Wear heavy leather gloves when handling or working
around cutting blades. Blades are extremely sharp and
can cause severe injury. DO NOT use a cutting blade that
shows signs of excessive wear or damage. 
 Blade Wear Limits 
1.  Inspect the blade frequently for signs of excessive wear
or damage:
•  New blade (A, Figure 23); 
•  Wear limit (notch starts) (B); 
•  Dangerous condition (C) - do not use on mower!
Replace with new blade.

 Blade Sharpening 
1. Obey the WARNING statements found on this page. 
2. Carefully stand the Rear Engine Rider on its rear
bumper. 
3. Remove the bolts (B, Figure 24), washers (C) and nuts
(D) securing the mower blade (A) to the spindle.

4. Inspect the condition of the blade (Figure 23). 
5. If the blade is in good condition, sharpen at 22 to 28
degrees (B, Figure 25). DO NOT sharpen beyond existing
cutting edge (A).

6. Check blade balance after sharpening. If necessary,
correct blade balance by grinding the heavy end of the
blade. 
7. Install the blade. Torque the blade mounting bolts to the
recommended range of 30 to 40 ft. lbs. 
Mower Blade Stop Time
1. The mower blade must stop rotating in 5 seconds or
less after moving the blade control lever to OFF or after
releasing the blade pedals.
