Replacement Interval Guide

The OEM recommends replacement every
105,000 miles.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle
must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an
INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of
valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt
failure is MOST LIKELY to occur.
A compression check of all cylinders should be
performed before removing the cylinder head.

Crankshaft pulley puller – No.1026.

Puller insert – No.6827-A.
º
Crankshaft pulley installer – No.6792.
º
Special Precautions
Disconnect battery ground cable.
º
Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing
º
belt removed.
Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
º
Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation
º
(unless otherwise stated).
Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other
º
sprockets.
Observe all tightening torques.
º

1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
2. Remove:
Right hand inner splash guard.
¡
Accessory drive belts.
¡
Crankshaft pulley bolt j
¡
No.1026/6827-A.

3. Support engine and remove:
¡
Right hand engine mount.
Upper torque strut (if fitted).
¡
PAS pump assembly (leave hoses connected).
¡
¡
Right hand engine mount bracket.
Lower torque strut (if fitted).
¡
Timing belt cover j
¡
4. Turn crankshaft clockwise until No.1 cylinder at
TDC of compression stroke with timing marks j
j
aligned.

5. Loosen tensioner pulley nut j
6. Insert a 6 mm Allen wrench j
clockwise until timing belt slack.
7. Remove the timing belt.
IMPORTANT: For maximum timing belt system
life, replace all tensioners and pulleys during
timing belt replacement.
1. Ensure camshaft timing marks j
2. Set the crankshaft sprocket timing mark j
before the TDC mark.
3. Install the timing belt to the sprockets and pulleys in
a counterclockwise direction starting at the
crankshaft sprocket.
4. Turn crankshaft until TDC marks j
take up slack in belt.
5. Insert a 6 mm Allen wrench into tensioner j
tensioner counterclockwise until notch aligned with
1.80
spring j
2.50
6. Tighten tensioner pulley nut j
7. Turn the crankshaft clockwise two turns and check
timing marks j
8. Ensure tensioner pulley spring is aligned with notch
j
. If not repeat tensioning procedure.
9
9. Install components in reverse order of removal.
10. Using tool No.6792, install the crankshaft pulley j
11. Use thread locking compound on crankshaft pulley
bolt.
12. Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt j
NOTE: The engine management system may
need to relearn cam/crank position values.
Connect a suitable scan tool to the data link
connector and follow manufacturer's
instructions or return vehicle to dealer.
