Starter system test

If IN VEHICLE is selected, the display alternates between the battery test results and the message PRESS FOR STARTER TEST when the
battery test has completed.
1. Press the ENTER button to start the test.
2. The analyzer will prompt you to start the engine.
As the voltage drops, the analyzer will display one of the following results:
Test results
STARTING VOLTAGE OK
STARTING VOLTAGE LOW
CHARGE BATTERY
REPLACE BATTERY

Charging system test

If IN VEHICLE is selected, the display alternates between the starter system test results and the message PRESS FOR CHARGING SYSTEM
TEST when the starter system test has completed.
The analyzer will display one of the following results and the alternator's output voltage.
Test results
CHARGING VOLTAGE OK
NO CHARGING VOLTAGE
CHARGING VOLTAGE LOW
CHARGING VOLTAGE HIGH

Description
The starting voltage is normal and the battery is fully charged.
The starting voltage is low and the battery is fully charged.
The starting voltage is low and the battery is discharged. Fully charge the battery and
retest the starter system.
The battery must be replaced before test the starter system.
Description
The system is showing normal output from the alternator. No problem is found.
The alternator does not charge the battery. Check the belts to ensure the alternator is rotating with
the engine running.
Replace broken or slipping belts and retest. Check all connections to and from the alternator,
especially the connection to the battery. If the connection is loose or heavily corroded, clean
or replace the cable and retest. If the belts and connections are in good condition, replace the
alternator. (Only voltage regulator is required to be replaced on the earlier-type vehicle equipped with
the external voltage regulator).
The alternator does not supply enough current to the system's electrical loads and not supply
enough current for charging the battery. Check the belts to ensure the alternator is rotating with the
engine running. Replace broken or slipping belts and retest. Check the connection from the alternator
to the battery. If the connection is loose or heavily corroded, clean or replace the cable and retest.
The voltage output from the alternator to the battery exceeds the normal limits of a functioning
regulator. Check to ensure there are no loose connection and that the ground wire is connected
properly. If there is no connection problem, replace the regulator. (Most alternators have a built-
in regulator so that it is important to replace the alternator. Only voltage regulator is required to
be replaced on the earlier-type vehicle equipped with the external voltage regulator). The regulator
controls output voltage based on the battery voltage, under-hood temperature and vehicle loads.
In other words, it controls the maximum voltage the system can produce based on the demanded
current and current that can be produced by the rotation of the rotor in the alternator. The normal
upper limit of a typical vehicle regulator is (14.7 +/- 0.5) V. Refer to the manufacturer specifications
for the correct limits, which may vary by vehicle type and manufacturer. A high charging rate will
overcharge the battery and may shorten its service life and cause it to fail. If REPLACE and CHARGING
VOLTAGE HIGH is shown when the charging system test has completed, check the electrolyte level in
the battery. A symptom of overcharging is electrolyte spewing through the vent caps, which causes
low electrolyte level and damages the battery.
