to create an opportunity to breathe when your head is under the snow and
air is not otherwise available from a usable air pocket.
It is imperative that you understand and accept the capabilities, use and
limitations of the AvaLung II.
Avalanches are killers; respect them and avoid avalanche-prone terrain
and unstable snow. The AvaLung II, together with informed and reliable
partners, transceivers, shovels, probes and the knowledge of how to use
them efficiently and effectively, may enable you to perform a successful
rescue of a buried person. In addition to your standard equipment, the
most important tools that you carry are your experience and knowledge
for assessing snow stability, good judgment and common sense to make
prudent decisions.
reMeMBer, the AvaLung II cannot make decisions for you and cannot
save you by itself if you are buried. It may merely provide you with a
potential supply of air if you have otherwise survived an avalanche or fall
into deep snow or a tree-well. Even if you are equipped with an AvaLung
II, your partners remain responsible for immediately locating you and
digging you out. Black Diamond highly recommends that you take a
snow-science and avalanche awareness course if you intend to venture
into the backcountry. Never ski or ride alone.
