5. Tips for Successful Operation
The correct pumping action needs practice. You
should first become accustomed to your new
breast pump.
5.1 Frequency of Pumping
The frequency of pumping will depend on
individual requirements.
If you will be apart from your child and/or in order
to sustain milk production, the natural feeding
rhythm should be maintained. You should there-
fore pump your breast milk 6 to 8 times a day,
including once during the night.
In all other cases you can use the pump to suit
your own individual needs.
5.2 Application
Breasts should be pumped alternately.
You should alternate between the breasts when
the milk flow slows down or ceases.
Pumping time will vary considerably depending on
individual requirements.
The following intervals have been tried and tested
but may vary according to the individual:
•
Right 5 - 7 minutes; left 5 - 7 minutes
Right 3 - 5 minutes; left 3 - 5 minutes
Right 2 - 3 minutes; left 2 - 3 minutes

5.3 Milk Quantity
Please do not be surprised if initially it takes a
while for the milk to start to flow. This is not
unusual. In fact it is quite normal for the following
reasons:
Milk production will adapt itself to the daily
requirement.
This means that the quantity of milk produced may
vary considerably.
•
Always ensure that you drink plenty of fluids
which also helps stimulate milk production.
•
Do not set the suction pressure too high. A
high suction level does not increase the quan-
tity of milk produced.
5.4 Milk-producing Reflex
With breastfeeding, putting your baby to the
breast stimulates the milk-producing reflex and the
milk will begin to flow. You can also stimulate the
milk producing reflex as follows:
•
Find yourself a quiet place to sit, where you
can completely relax when using the breast
pump.
•
You should assume a comfortable and relaxed
posture.
