3 Applications

The light controller DMX-3216 is specially
designed for illumination installations on stages
or in discotheques . 16 light effect units with a
DMX 512 input, e . g . dimmers, scanners, moving
heads etc ., can be controlled by means of the
controller, with up to 32 channels each . The chan-
nels for movement control can be operated by
means of the two jog wheels and can, if required,
be reversed .
16 scalable movement patterns may be called
up . In addition, it is possible to save 32 scenes
that can even be called up in a mixed way . Fur-
thermore, 16 sequence programs with up to
750 steps can be created . These sequence pro-
grams can be re played automatically, music-con-
trolled (by means of an audio signal or by means
of the integrated microphone) or manually . It is
also possible to replay multiple programs at the
same time .
Using the USB interface, the programs created
can be externally saved or exchanged between
multiple devices . The MIDI interface provides an
option for remote-control of the controller, e . g .
by means of a MIDI sequencer or by means of
another DMX-3216 .
4 Setting the Unit into
Operation
The controller can either be installed in a rack
(482 mm / 19") or used as a table-top unit . Rack
installation requires 3 RS (RS = rack space =
44 .45 mm) .
Prior to connecting or changing existing con-
nections, switch off the DMX-3216 and the units
to be connected .

4.1 Connections

4.1.1 DMX output

As a DMX output, a 3-pole XLR jack with the
following pin configuration is provided:
Pin 1 = ground, pin 2 = DMX−, pin 3 = DMX+
For connection, use special cables for DMX signal
transmission (e . g . cables of the CDMXN series) .
For cable lengths exceeding 150 m, it is generally
recommended to insert a DMX level matching
amplifier (e . g . SR-103DMX) .
1) Connect the output DMX OUT (26) to the
DMX control input of the first unit to be con-
trolled .
2) Connect the DMX output of the first unit to
be controlled to the control input of the next
DMX-controlled unit . Connect the output of
this DMX-controlled unit to the input of the
following unit etc . until all DMX-controlled
units have been connected in a chain .
3) To prevent interference in signal transmission,
in case of long cables or a multitude of units
connected in series, terminate the control
output of the last DMX unit in the chain with
a 120 Ω resistor (> 0 .3 W): Connect a corre-
sponding terminating plug (e . g . DLT-123) to
the output jack .

4.1.2 Audio input

To use an audio signal instead of the internal
microphone for control in sync with the music,
connect an audio source (e . g . Aux output of a
mixer) to the RCA input AUDIO (28) of the DMX-
3216 . When the jack is connected, the internal
microphone will be switched off .

4.1.3 MIDI connections

For controlling the controller by means of MIDI
signals, the 5-pole jacks MIDI IN, MIDI OUT and
MIDI THRU are available .
Connect a unit for controlling the controller
by means of MIDI (e . g . MIDI sequencer, keyboard)
to the jack MIDI IN (31) . The signal will then be
available at the jack MIDI THRU (30) for additional
MIDI-controlled units .
At the jack MIDI OUT, the control signals that
the controller transmits while it is being operated
are available (e . g . to control another DMX-3216) .

4.1.4 USB connection

For saving and loading data, connect a USB stor-
age device to the USB port (27) .

4.1.5 Power supply

Connect the low-voltage plug of the power sup-
ply unit provided to the jack DC INPUT (32) and
then connect the power supply unit to a mains
socket (230 V/ 50 Hz) .
