3. ELECTRICITY AND WIRING
Ground the motor before connecting it to a power
supply. Failure to ground and bond the pump motor
can result in serious or fatal electrical shock. See the
section below for grounding instructions.
Do not ground to a gas supply line.
To avoid dangerous or fatal electric shocks, switch
off the motor before working on the electrical
connections.
A tripped GFCI indicates an electrical problem. If it
trips and does not reset, consult an electrician to
inspect and repair the electrical system.
Fire hazard :
Match the supply voltage to the voltage on the motor
nameplate.
Ensure that the available power supply matches the
voltage, phase and cycle of the motor, and that the
wire size is appropriate for the power rating (KW) and
distance from the power source.
NOTE - All electrical wiring MUST be done by a
licensed electrician, and MUST conform to local
codes and regulations. Use only copper conductors.
Voltage :
The motor voltage MUST NOT be more than 10%
above or below the rated voltage indicated on
the motor nameplate, otherwise the motor may
overheat, resulting in an overload trip and reduced
component life. If the voltage is less than 90% or
more than 110% of the rated voltage when the motor
is running at full load, consult the power company.
Ground, connect and wire the motor according to
local or national electrical code requirements.
Connect the ground terminal of the motor to the
ground of the electrical service. Connect the motor
to the pool structure. The grounding will connect all
metal parts in and around the pool with a continuous
wire.
Grounding reduces the risk of current flowing
between grounded metal objects, which could
potentially cause an electrical shock if grounded
or shorted. Consult the regulations for all wiring
standards, including, but not limited to, grounding,
bonding and general wiring procedures.
External wiring :
See specific wiring instructions in the technical data
sections for each pump covered by this manual. The
pump is delivered pre-wired.
If local electrical codes require power cords with
locking plugs, please check with your local shop or
online for availability.
NEVER open the motor housing to make changes to
the factory installed equipment. If you attempt to do
so, it will void your warranty. If the pump cord you
purchased is not compatible with the electrical or
building cords in your area, you must return it to your
dealer and purchase a different style pump.
The in-ground pump MUST be permanently
connected to an appropriate electrical circuit. If other
lights or appliances are also on the same circuit, be
sure to add their amperage loads before calculating
wire and breaker sizes. Use the load breaker as the
main on-off switch.
Always install a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)
in the circuit; it will detect a short circuit to ground
and cut off the power before it becomes dangerous
to pool users.
For the required breaker size and testing procedures,
refer to the manufacturer's instructions. In the event
of a power failure, check that the GFCI does not trip,
preventing normal operation of the pump. Reset it if
necessary.
Advice :
If you do not use conduit for the motor wiring, be
sure to seal the wire opening at the back of the motor
to prevent dirt, insects, etc. from entering.
