It is important here that the patient:

is sitting/standing/lying comfortably
▪
does not cross their legs
▪
places their feet flat on the floor (when sitting or standing)
▪
supports their back and arms (when sitting or lying)
▪
keeps quiet and does not speak
Note
▪
The patient should relax as much as possible during the measurement and must not speak, unless
this is to express discomfort.
▪
There must be 5 minutes' rest before the first reading is recorded.
▪
During a 24-hour measurement, the patient should adopt one of the three positions shown in Table 1
during a blood pressure measurement if possible.
▪
The measurements may be influenced by the measuring location, the position of the patient, the
exertion or the physiological condition of the person to be measured.
