User Instructions
The user must read, understand and follow this instruction
manual before using this equipment. This manual must be kept
in a safe place for future reference and inspection/recertification
records and should be used as part of an employee training
program. It is essential for the safety of the user that if the SRL is
resold outside the original country of destination the reseller shall
provide instructions for use, maintenance, periodic examination
and for repair in the language of the country in which the device
will be used.
Latchways SRL shall only be used by a person who is trained and competent
in its safe use. Contact Latchways if you have any concerns regarding the
use, maintenance, applications or operation of this device.
Fitness and age significantly affect a person's ability to safely withstand
fall arrest loads. Only people who are physically and mentally fit and
healthy, not under the influence of drugs or alcohol are permitted to use
this equipment. If you are uncertain about your ability, consult your doctor.
Latchways SRLs must not be used by pregnant women or minors.
Intended purpose: The Self Retractable Lifeline (SRL) in accordance
with EN360:2002 is intended to be used as a connecting element within
a personal fall arrest system. It must be used vertically in situations where
user mobility is required and fall protection is needed - inspection, general
construction and maintenance work etc.
Product Limitations: Latchways SRL shall not be used outside its
limitations, or any purpose other than that for which it is intended. All
maintenance work is to be conducted by an authorised person. Do not
attempt to modify or repair the equipment. Failure to follow these instructions
or misuse of this equipment may result in serious injury or death.

C
1 The SRL is for a single user only, only one person can be connected at
any time
A
.
2 Maximum user weight (including tools) is 140 kg
B
.
3 SRL must be protected from fire, acids, caustic solutions, welding
flames, sparks or similar.
4 Latchways SRLs can be used in temperatures ranging from
-30°C to +50°C.
5 This device should be positioned as vertically as possible above the
position of the user and used at an angle that is no more than 30° to
the vertical
C
.
6 The SRL must not be used if there is any risk of the SRL contacting high
voltage power lines.
7 Latchways recommends that the SRL should not be used in conjunction
with a caged ladder.
HSE research has previously found that caged ladders (i.e. ladders
with hoops) could not provide positive fall arrest capability. Further
research has shown that there is a risk of the user striking the cage in
the event of a fall or the caged ladder interfering with the performance
of a Fall Arrest System. In addition to this, rescue of a casualty could
be hindered by the caged ladder.
8 Mansafe Sealed SRL's are suitable for use in areas in which explosive
atmospheres caused by mixtures of air and gases, vapours or mists or
by air/dusts mixtures are likely to occur, as per BS EN 13463-1:2001
equipment group II, category 2 (
II 2 G c IIC T6).
9 As a safety precaution in some industries, it is required that any object
connected at height is tethered to the structure with an additional 'back
8
up' connection. The Sealed SRL has been designed to incorporate a
unique carry handle, which has also been tested for use as the
secondary retention point.

WARNING! The secondary retention point can only be used as a
method of tethering the Sealed SRL back to the structure and
must NEVER be used as the main anchor connection.
System requirements: A fall arrest system comprises of a structural
anchor point, full body harness, connector (karabiner/hook) and SRL.
Ensure all elements in the system are used only as specified by the
manufacturer. It is essential for safety that the anchor device and anchor
point should always be positioned, and work carried out in such a way, as
to minimise both the potential for a fall and potential fall distance.
WARNING! Incompatible components can lead to connectors
accidentally disengaging. Always ensure all connectors are
correctly engaged and locked.
1 Connectors must conform to EN 362 and be self closing and self locking.
2 A full body harnesses conforming to EN 361
must be worn when using Latchways SRL.
3 The anchorage structure must be able to
< 10 KN
sustain a minimum force of 10 kN
D
.
Latchways recommends using a certified
anchor point. Refer to EN 795. If more than
one personal fall arrest system is attached to
the same supporting structure then the
former strength requirement has to be multiplied by the number of
personalfall arrest systems attached to the supporting structure.
4 A minimum of 3 m from the working level to the nearest obstruction,
lower level or ground underneath a hazard should be maintained.
5 An emergency rescue plan must be in place, to be implemented in the
event of a fall.
NOTE: Selection of the anchor point position must take in to account any
risks posed by moving machinery and pendulum falls. To ensure positive
locking of the SRL a clear, unobstructed fall path is necessary. Do not use
the SRL when working on such materials as sand or grain, as this may not
allow sufficient speed to cause the SRL to lock in the event of a fall. It is
essential for safety to verify the free space required beneath the user at the
workplace before each occasion of use, so that, in the event of a fall there
will be no collision with the ground or other obstacle in the fall path.
Operation and use: Attach the SRL overhead to a suitable anchorage
or anchorage connector. Perform a pre-use check of the equipment, to
ensure that it operates correctly. To check operation pull smoothly on the
lifeline listening for the audible clicking, then pull sharply on the lifeline to
engage the locking mechanism.
Connect the self locking snap hook
on the end of the lifeline to the
designated fall arrest attachment
point of a full body harness
E
.
Once connected to the SRL the
user is free to move about the
working area. The lifeline will extract and retract without hesitation. If the
lifeline is prevented from retracting during normal use, extract the lifeline
fully and allow it to retract under tension. Then check the locking function
of the device. If the lifeline continues to not retract fully then return the
SRL to an authorised person for inspection and recertification. An increase
in fall distance can occur if the lifeline is prevented from retracting, this
must be avoided.
F
G
1 Never attach an additional lanyard or similar component to lengthen
the line.
2 Do not allow the lifeline to pass through legs or under arms.
3 This product is intended for overhead applications only. Never use this
product for ground level attachments or cable systems
F
. Never use
over an edge
G
.
4 Do not allow the lifeline to be in contact with or rub against sharp edges.
NOTE: When the SRL is not in use, do not allow the lifeline to be fully
extracted for long periods of time as this may cause weakening of the
retraction spring. Do not let go of the lifeline as it will retract at high speed
potentially damaging internal parts. If the SRL is positioned high above
the users head, the use of a tag line/second line is acceptable to allow
the SRL to fully retract. Tag lines/second lines must be removed from the
device before use.
Inspection instructions: Regular and periodic examinations of the SRL
are required to ensure the safety of the user, which is dependent on the
continued efficiency and durability of the SRL.
1 Inspect the SRL to see if the
visual
load
indicator
has
deployed, this will determine if
a fall has occurred. Latchways
Sealed SRL incorporate an
indicating swivel hook designed
to deploy in the event of a fall. If
any red colour is visible around
the swivel area of the hook then loading has occurred
H
.
2 Inspect to ensure all labels are present and fully legible.
3 Inspect connecting hooks or karabiners for working condition and
signs of damage or corrosion.
4 Visually inspect the entire unit for signs of
corrosion, damage or distortion. Ensure all
"tic, tic"
fastenings are present and secure.
5 Fully extract the lifeline. As the lifeline retracts it
must do so without hesitation (no slack line
should occur). During extraction and retraction
ensure that a clicking sound can be heard
which indicates that the locking mechanism is
functioning correctly
I
.
6 Pull the lifeline sharply making sure that this
causes the device to lock up.
7 Inspect lifeline. If the lifeline has any cuts,
broken strands, kinks, bird-caging, welding
spatter, burns, abraded areas or shows
signs of excessive soiling, corrosion or UV
degradation it must be replaced
J
.
WARNING! If the SRL has been subjected to loading, or you are
in any doubt concerning the safety or condition of the device, it
must be removed from service immediately and recertified by an
authorised person. It may not be used again until confirmed in
writing by a competent person that it is safe to do so.
No part of this document may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, without prior permission in writing from Latchways plc.
A periodic examination of the device should be completed by an authorised
person other than the user at least every 12 months. Local legislation or
environmental conditions (corrosive or chemical environments) may dictate
more frequent recertification intervals.
NOTE: It is mandatory that a full service of this product be completed within
2 years of manufacture and annually thereafter.
The life of the product can be affected by environmental conditions.
If, during periodic inspection by a competent person, the product is
deemed unsafe it should be removed from service.
NOTE: Authorised person means a person who is trained and approved
by Latchways in identifying hazards or dangerous conditions of the self
retracting lifeline.
It is the responsibility of the site safety officer or the user to maintain a
record of each periodic inspection in the recertification log which can be
found at the front of this manual.
Maintenance, Storage and Transportation: If required, clean the
SRL exterior, lifeline and labels (to maintain legibility) with warm water
(40°C) and non biological detergent then rinse. An excessive build-up of
dirt or paint etc. on the lifeline may compromise the retraction. If the SRL
becomes wet, either from being in use or from cleaning, position the SRL
such that any excess water can drain out and leave to dry naturally away
from direct heat. The full body harness and any other system components
should be cleaned and stored according to manufacturer's instructions.
Store the SRL in a cool, dry, clean environment. Ensure SRL is away from
dust, oil and direct sunlight. Inspect the SRL after long periods of storage.
During transportation the device must be protected to prevent damage
or contamination.
