Installation Tasks

1 Determining the AC current load

2 Installing PDUs in a rack

3 Attaching the ground wire
4 Cabling the PDUs
Determining the AC Current Load
Before you install a PDU in your rack, you must ensure that the total power requirements of all the systems
you plan to connect to this PDU are within the PDU's maximum current specification. You may require
multiple PDUs to properly protect your installed rack systems and equipment.
The maximum current requirements are found in the User's Guide for most rack-mountable products.
To find the total current value, add the maximum current values for all components that you intend to plug
into the PDU. The total current value must not exceed the maximum current rating marked on the side of
the PDU. For example, if your PDU has a maximum current rating of 16 A, the total combined current for
all component power cord connectors plugged into the PDU must not exceed 16 A.
NOTICE:
The maximum AC current load that a single PDU can support is specified on its label. Any load greater
than that specified will cause the circuit breaker in the PDU to trip, disconnecting the power. Multiple PDUs must
be installed if the electrical load exceeds the maximum current rating for a single PDU.
Installing PDUs in a Rack
You can install the PDU in either a horizontal or vertical orientation in a rack. When mounted horizontally
at the back of the rack, the PDU occupies 1 U of rack component mounting space. When mounted
vertically or horizontally on the side of the rack, the PDU does not occupy any rack component mounting
space. This installation method is referred to as 0-U mounting because the unit is secured on separate rails
on the side of the rack cabinet.
NOTE:
Due to variations in rack design, the 0-U mounting position is not an option for all racks. The 1-U mounting
position is an option for all racks that meet the specifications of the American National Standards Institute
(ANSI)/Electrical Industries Association (IEC) standard ANSI/EIA-310-D-92, International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) 297, and Deutsche Industrie Norm (DIN) 41494.
