5. Operation and use

Do not leave the Smart Tail Docker in animal housing longer than necessary.
Ensure clean and dry storage.
NOTE! The cutting knife and extension tube are hot during operation. Always take
precautions to avoid contact with these surfaces.
To ensure cauterising the wound as well as possible, it is best to dock the tail in a
calm manner, starting from underneath.
The MS Smart Tail Docker has a heat control switch at the front. This control switch allows the user
to adjust the power to 3 different heat settings. This is due to the different resistance levels of the
docking knives. The user should adjust the setting of this switch until the knives give an orange
glow. If the knives give a white glow, the setting is too high. This will shorten the service life of the
knives.
When fitting the knives, the user should take care to ensure that the fixing screws are tightened
properly, as this improves the contact resistance.
The service life of the knives depends largely on the operating conditions, e.g. working speed,
pressure applied, temperature, age of piglets. Testing has yielded results varying from treatment of
40 to 400 litters.
6. Maintenance
The Smart Tail Docker can be dismounted from the MS Multi Treatment Unit and
put onto a workbench for cleaning and maintenance.
When doing this, ensure that the MS Smart Tail Docker is not exposed to water or
dampness. You can clean the equipment with compressed air or a dry cloth.
Always ensure that the system has been disconnected before replacing the knife.
If the knife fails to reach an adequate heat, this may indicate that the connection between the knife
insert and the adapter bushing needs cleaning (wire brush/sandpaper).
If the screws are not tightened properly, this can also result in the knife producing
less heat.
The screws will need to be tightened occasionally due to materials expanding and contracting.
Note: tight means tight!
