Introduction to the SPCP355
The SPCP355 is a Power Supply Unit (PSU) combined with an 8 Input/2 Output
Expander which is contained in a G5 housing. The PSU is battery backed up by
two 24 Ah or two 27 Ah batteries and provides eight power and four logical
outputs.
The expander monitors the PSU for over-current, fuse failures, AC voltage,
communications, and battery output. The expander receives power and data
directly from the PSU via a connector cable and interfaces with the SPC controller
via the SPC X-BUS.
Fig. 1 shows the PSU and the I/O expander (highlighted in grey).

connector, with a straight through cable.
13. Clock Reference. Not used for SPCP355.
14. T1, T2: Tamper switch inputs. Fit a link across the inputs on this block if
tamper switches are not used.
15. Front/back tamper switch (see also Fig. 10, item 3).
16. NO/NC: Configurable NO/NC logical relay output (see section Wiring the
Outputs).
17. Glass fuses (400 mA T) for outputs 1 - 8.
18. OP 6 - 8 and SW 6 - 8: Combined power outputs (OP) and logical outputs
(SW). Standard 12 V DC power outputs (same as item 19 below)
combined with configurable open drain logical outputs (4K7 EOL
supervised/non-supervised).
19. OP 1 - 5: Standard 12 V DC power outputs.
WARNING: The combined maximum load current drawn from all 12 V DC
outputs (OP 1 – 8) plus COMM1 (Fig 1, item 12) should not exceed 2.4 A.
Each individual output and output A2 (Fig 1, item 11) should not exceed 300
mA. If the device current requires more than 300 mA, it is recommended to
parallel the outputs as shown in Fig. 11 Power Outputs (OP 1 – OP 5) and
Fig. 12 Combined Power and Logical Outputs (SW 6 - 8).
20. BTE 2: Battery 2 temperature monitoring input.
21. BATT 1 & BATT 2: Battery 1 and Battery 2 connectors.
22. BTE 1: Battery 1 temperature monitoring input.
23. PTC fuses: Rated at 300 mA (protects A2 and A1 outputs, Fig. 1, items
10, 11). Refer to section on System Recovery.
24. PTC fuse: Rated at 5 A (protects Fig. 1, item 3). Refer to section on
System Recovery.
25. PSU Kickstart Switch. Refer to section on System Recovery.
Expander
26. NO/NC: Logical relay outputs. The expander provides two configurable
NO/NC logical relay outputs (see section Wiring the Outputs) for use on
the SPC system.
27. I 1 – 8: Inputs. The expander has 8 on-board zone inputs that can be
configured as intruder alarm zones on the SPC system (see section Wiring
the Inputs).
28. Auxiliary power supply (12 V): Do not use.
29. X-BUS Input Power. Do not use. The expander is powered via COMM1 -
Fig 1, item 12.
30. X-BUS Interface: The communications bus connects expanders on the
SPC system.
31. Termination Jumper: This jumper, as a default, is always fitted. For more
information, see section Wiring the X-BUS Interface.
32. PSU 4-pin Interface: Connects to Fig.1, item 12, power and data
connector, with a straight through cable.
33. Front tamper switch. (Not used).
34. Front tamper by-pass [JP1]. By-pass must be fitted.
35. Buzzer. The buzzer is activated in order to locate the expander (see SPC
Installation & Configuration Guide).
36. Back tamper by-pass [JP6]. Must be fitted for all expanders in the
housing.
37. Manual addressing switches. The switches allow manual setting of the
ID of each expander in the system.
38. X-BUS status LED. The LED indicates the status of the X-BUS when the
system is in FULL ENGINEER mode as follows:

The PSU supports three open drain logical outputs which may be supervised for
tamper detection. Output tamper detection is enabled via SPC configuration. To
facilitate output tamper supervision, a logical output must be terminated with a 4K7
end of line resistor which is placed in parallel with the load device (for example, an
external bell) as shown in Item 2, Fig 5. A power diode (1N4001 or similar) is also
required if not in the external device circuitry.
Note that output tamper detection can only function when the output is
inactive in quiescent state.
Installing the Batteries
If using two batteries in the G5 housing, it is recommended that both
batteries should be the same type and capacity.

Install the batteries into the battery compartment.
Secure each battery to the housing using a battery strap. Ensure that the
strap is thread through the battery strap holes (Fig. 9, item 4) at the back of
the battery compartment and around the battery, with the two ends of the
strap at the front of the battery.
Fasten the two ends of the strap firmly using the Velcro strip. Ensure that the
strap is tight around the battery.
Connect the leads from the PSU to the battery + (red) and – (black) terminals.

WARNING
When installing the battery, always connect the positive (+) lead to the battery
first before connecting the negative (-) lead.
When removing the battery, always remove the negative (-) lead first before
removing the positive (+) lead.
Testing Battery Voltage
The PSU performs a load test on each battery by placing a load resistor across the
battery terminals and measuring the resulting voltage, ensuring that the battery
voltage does not drop significantly under load conditions. The battery test is carried
out every 5 seconds..
Deep Discharge Protection
If mains power fails to the SPCP355 for a prolonged period, each battery supplies
power to the PSU 12 V DC power outputs for a finite duration. The batteries
eventually discharge themselves.
To prevent a battery discharging beyond recovery, the PSU disconnects the
battery when the battery output voltage reaches 10.5 V DC. When the mains A/C
is restored, the battery is recharged.
Wiring the X-BUS interface
The X-BUS interface connects expanders and keypads to the SPC controller. The
X-BUS can be wired in a number of different configurations depending on the
installation requirements.
Note: Maximum system cable length = number of expanders and keypads in the
system x maximum distance for cable type.
