3. Commissioning

All soldering tools must be stored in the specially designed safety tray. Connect the corre-
sponding connecting wires to the control unit:
- Air hose of hot gas pencil to `Air' nipple [8]
- Vacuum hose of de-soldering bit to `Vac' nipple [9]
- Insert the electrical connection wires of the soldering tools into 7-pin connecting sockets
[5] and lock.
Warning: To avoid injury, the vacuum hose of the de-soldering bit should never be
connected to the 'Air Nipple'.
Check whether the mains voltage is consistent with the information on the type label. If the
control unit's mains voltage is correct, connect it to the mains. Switch the unit on by means
of the mains switch [1]. When the unit is switched on, the microprocessor performs a self-
test during which all segments are briefly in operation. Next, the electronic display auto-
matically switches to the standard temperature setting of 350˚C for all channels and 50%
for the `Air' setting. For channels which are being used, the green LED lights up. Continuous
LED light-up indicates that the system is heating up. When the LED flashes on and off, this
indicates that the pre-selected temperature has been attained.
Channel selection
The digital display can be set to the desired channels (1, 2 or 3) by operation of the `1-2-
3' key and to the `AIR' function. The displayed channel is marked by a red LED above the
connector.
Switching channels on or off
In the standard position, all channels are switched on and set to 350˚C. The `Air' function is
set to 50%.
If a channel is not required, it can be switched off by simultaneously pressing the `UP' and
`DOWN' keys. An `OFF' sign appears upon selection of the channel switched off. To activa-

te a channel, the `1-2-3' key is used to select the desired channel, followed by pressing the
`UP' and `DOWN' keys simultaneously. Switching a channel off does not cause the stored
data to be lost.
Temperature / air setting
In order to make it possible to set the desired temperature or air flow-rate, the correspon-
ding channel has to be selected with the `1-2-3' key. Activation of the `UP' or `DOWN' key
will alter the temperature or the air function in the appropriate direction for channels 1, 2
or 3.
If the key is held down continuously, the value selection will change rapidly.
Variance display
The standard value displayed is the actual value of the selected channel, when the symbol
`C' is continuously visible for channels 1, 2 and 3, and for the air flow-rate setting the `AIR'
symbol is continuously visible. A brief touch of the `UP' or `DOWN' key will produce a dis-
play of the set value for approx. 4 seconds, whereupon the corresponding symbol `C' or
`AIR' will flash on the display. After approx. 4 seconds, the display will automatically switch
to the actual value.
The system is designed such that only the set value is indicated where a hot gas bit is ope-
rated.
Timer
The WMD-3 control unit is also equipped with a timer function. This timer enables pre-
viously set temperatures of individual channels to be set back to 150˚C. The set-back peri-
od can be set in 5-minute stages and will start after the last operation. The set-back peri-
od can be set to a maximum of 60 minutes. It is possible to adjust different set-back peri-
od for individual channels.
On operation of the hot-air pencil, the timer fulfils the function of time-limiting the airflow,
and can be set in 1-second stages up to a maximum of 60 seconds (same for all channels).
Setting of the timer
The timer function is not activated in the standard setting. Before setting the timer, the desi-
red channel must be selected by means of the `1-2-3' key. Next, the `TIMER' key is activa-
ted and the clock symbol and the `000' sign will appear in the display. In order to activate
the timer function, the `UP' and `DOWN' keys must be pressed simultaneously within
approx. 4 seconds. As long as the key-operated switch (12) is not in the locked position,
the desired setback time can be set with the "UP" or "DOWN" key. If the key is continuously
pressed down, then the set value will change rapidly. If a hot-gas pencil is used, then the
set value can be changed in 1-second stages by pressing the required direction key, or in
