Two generic types of penetration resistant insert are curently available in PPE footwear.
These are metal types and those from non-metal materials. Both types meet the
minimum requirements for penetration resistance of the standard marked on this
footwear but each has different additional advantages or disadvantages including the
following:
▪ Metal inserts provide more protection against sharp objects but due to shoemaking
limitations does not cover the entire lower area of the boot.
▪ Non-metallic inserts are usually lighter and more flexible and provide larger protection
area but sharp objects can penetrate the material more easily.
For more information about the type of penetration resistant insert provided in your
footwear please contact us (Rosenbauer International AG) or your local dealer.
SERVICE LIFETIME
The service lifetime depends on the degree of wear and the use intensity in the
respective areas.
To ensure the function of your shoes and wearing comfort throughout the whole
lifetime, they must be stored properly, ie in a dry place and not directly next to a heat
source. Regular maintenance extends the longevity of the product. Please note that also
unused shoes undergo an aging process while being stored.
Footwear for firefighters must be checked at regular intervals. Once any of the following
signs of wear is noticed, the boots have to be replaced or repaired:
▪ Cracks on the material surface, that affect more than half the material thickness of
the upper leather.
▪ Abrasion on the upper material, expecially when the toe cap is exposed.
▪ Deformations, burnup and melting appearance, blisters or torn seams on the boot
upper.
▪ Cracks in the outer sole longer than 10mm and deeper than 3mm
▪ Separation of upper and outer sole over more than 10-15 mm long and 5 mm wide/
deep
▪ Tread depths less than 1,5 mm
▪ Deformation and breakages of the inner sole (only visible when removing the insole)
▪ Inner damage to lining and seams, exposed toe cap
▪ Functionality of the locking system (zipper, stainless steel cable, guide rail, push-
rotary knob, etc.)
