Westward Operating Instructions and Parts Manual
Study, understand and follow all
instructions before operating this device. Do not
exceed rated capacity. Do not use as an
independent lifting device. Lifting device only.
Immediately after lifting, support the vehicle with
appropriate means. No alterations shall be made
to this product. Only attachments and/or adapters
supplied by the manufacturer shall be used.
Failure to heed these markings may result in
personal injury and/or property damage.
Preparation
BEFORE USE
1. Before using this jack, read the operator's manual
completely and familiarize yourself thoroughly with
the product, its components and recognize the
hazards associated with its use.
2. Verify that the product and application are
compatible.
3. To familiarize yourself with basic operation, turn
the Release Valve:
a. Clockwise until firm resistance is felt to further
turning. This is the 'CLOSED' Release Valve
position used to raise the ram plunger.
b. Counter-clockwise, but no more than 1/2 turn
from the closed position. This is the 'OPEN'
Release Valve position used to lower the Ram
Plunger.
4. With Ram Plunger fully retracted and release
valve closed, pump the operating handle. If Ram
Plunger responds immediately, jack is ready for
use. If jack does not respond, follow Bleeding/
Venting Trapped Air instruction, pg. 2.
5. Check that the pump operates smoothly and
easily before putting into service. Replace worn
or damaged parts and assemblies with authorized
replacement parts only.
Bleeding/Venting Trapped Air
With the Release Valve in the OPEN position (step
3b above) and with Ram Plunger fully lowered, locate
and remove the Oil Filler Plug/Screw. Insert the Pump
Handle into the Handle Sleeve; then pump 6 to 8
full strokes (for model 5M460C, operate air control
valve for 6 to 8 seconds). This will help release any
pressurized air which may be trapped within the
reservoir. Oil level should be even with the bottom of
the oil filler hole. Reinstall the Oil Filler Plug/Screw.
Operation
LIFTING
1. Turn release valve lever clockwise until it is
firmly closed.
2. Position hook of engine crane carefully onto load.
3. Operate manually by pumping with handle or by
connecting to air supply and squeezing lift control
valve (for model 5M460C only) until hook of engine
crane contacts load.
4. Raise load to desired height and then transfer load
to a device that will adequately support the load.

LOWERING
NOTICE:
Avoid "shock loads" created by quickly
opening and closing the release valve as load is being
lowered. This may result in overloading of the
hydraulic circuit and possible damage to the jack.
1. Slowly turn release valve lever counterclockwise no
more than one full turn.
2. Push handle sleeve down manually if still extended
to reduce piston exposure to rusting. Remove from
air supply when done with operation.
Maintenance
NOTICE:
Use premium quality hydraulic jack oil.
Avoid mixing types of oil. Do not use brake fluid,
alcohol, glycerin, detergent motor oil, or dirty oil.
Improper fluid can cause serious internal damage to
the jack rendering it inoperative..
NOTICE:
For model 5M460C, periodically check for
leaks at air connections. Use thread compound to
repair. Avoid the use of thread tape when possible.
ADDING OIL
1. With saddle fully lowered and piston depressed,
set jack in its upright level position and remove oil
filler plug.
2. Fill until oil is level with or just below filler plug hole.
CHANGING OIL
1. For best performance and longest life, replace the
complete oil supply at least once a year.
2. To drain the oil completely, remove the oil filler plug.
3. Lay the jack on its side and allow the oil to run out
into suitable drain pan. Dispose of in accordance
with local regulations.
4. Replace with proper oil as described above.
5. Perform Bleeding/Venting Trapped Air procedure.
LUBRICATION
1. Add lubricating oil to all pivoting sections every
3 months.
2. For model 5M460C, when used on a daily basis,
lubricate air motor before use. If no air line oiler is
used, run 1/2 teaspoon of oil thru the air motor.
Squirt or pour oil into the hose connection nearest
the air supply connection, then activate the lift
control valve for three seconds.
RUST PREVENTION
Check ram and piston for signs of rust on a regular basis.
Clean as needed with a lint free, oil saturated cloth.
STORAGE
When not in use, always leave the piston and ram all
the way down.
