I. Instruction
According to the Standard of ISO1133,ASTM1238,ASTM3364, controlled by the
PLC, the series of testers are used to, under the high temperature,
mass-flow rate (MFR) and the melt volume-flow rate (MVR) of thermoplastic, such as
polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, ABS resin, melt formaldehyde resin,
polycarbonate, nylon, fluorine plastic, and
automatically controls the temperature and displays the temperature and the time on a
build-in LCD. Two types of cut methods are available: time controlling cut and setting
displacement cut. The tester also can automatically calculate MVR value, draw MVR
curves and print out all the required experimental datas.
II. Operating Principle
2.1 The tester melts the determined specimen under high temperature by heating the
furnace. The melted specimen flows out a specified hole under the given load. In plastic
producing activities, we usually use the melt index to, under melted status, measure the
physical properties of the polymer, such as the fluidity, the mucosity and so on.
2.2 The melt mass-flow rate is the weight or the volume of the melt specimen. There are
two methods, MFR and MVR.
2.2.1 The mass-flow rate MFR is the average mass of substance which passes through
a given surface per 10 minutes. The unit is (g/10min), Denoted by MFR, which is
defined as
Where
MFR
The melt mass-flow rate of material, unit g/10min;
m
Average mass, unit g;
t
Time interval,
600
Reference time (10 min), unit s.
2.2.2 The melt volume-flow rate of specimen is the average volume of substance which
passes through a given surface per 10 minutes. The unit is (cm
define the function of MVR as following
Where
MVR
the melt volume-flow rate of material, unit cm3/10min;
L
the distance of the predetermined movement of the piston, unit mm;
t
Time interval, unit s;
42.7
the reference time (10 min) times the area of the piston.
2.2.3 MFR Example
There is a group of plastic samples which have been cut per 30 seconds respectively.
The weights are 0.0838 g, 0.0862 g, 0.0815 g, 0.0895 g, 0.0825 g respectively.
The average weight, m=(0.0838+0.0862+0.0815+0.0895 +0.0825)÷5=0.0847 g
Substituting into the equation, we have
so that the MFR is 1.694g/10min.
2.2.4 MVR Example
In 135 seconds, the tester extrudes 30mm melted plastic specimen.
