AUI Connector
Single port
(RS Stock no. 176-494)
RS single and dual port transceivers are equipped with one or two AUI
connections respectively (see fig 1). Each transceiver has a tap
connection† which interfaces with Ethernet trunk cable via an active tap
(RS stock no. 405-089) or Ethernet and Thin-Ethernet adaptors (RS
stock nos. 405-102 and 405-118).
Each transceiver has indication LEDs as follows:-

† Note: It is important to ensure the correct alignment of tap or adaptor
pins with the PCB connections in the transceiver.

Installation
Before installation ensure that the network is switched off.
Key distance parameters are as follows:-
176-494
Minimum distance between transceivers
176-501
Thick Ethernet: 2.5 metres
Thin Ethernet: 0.5 metres
Maximum distance between transceiver and workstation via AUI
connection : 50 metres.
Remove the tap fixing screws from the transceiver (see fig 1).
Slowly and firmly push tap or adaptor into position†. Once inserted,
secure by replacing the screws. Once installed make the AUI
connection as follows.
1. Allow for the most direct path between the Ethernet transceiver and
workstation to be connected.
2. Ensure the AUI connection cable is properly supported and does
not pull on either the transceiver or workstation.
3. Use 15-way D connectors employing slide locks so that the AUI
connections are properly engaged.

DC supply polarity requirements
Do not mix polarity amongst hosts.
The polarity supplied by hosts must be all positive or all negative. The
majority of computers use a positive polarity voltage. Positive or
negative polarity can be determined as follows:-
Positive polarity:
Negative polarity: Pin 13 (to shell) ±0.5V;
