8. BINDING A SCRATCH PAD
This chapter provides quick reference for making a scratch pad (book without a cover). For detailed
description about the complete binding procedure, please refer to chapter 'Binding a Soft Cover
Book'. Note that there are two slightly different methods to make a scratch pad: with or without a
silicon paper. The silicon paper method is faster compared to the alternative where one has to wait
until the adhesive cures before the turntable is rotated back. It is not necessary to have extra supply
of silicon papers as one can easily re-use the silicon lining papers left over from hardcover book
binding.
Before you begin, ensure that
•
Τhere is glue in the applicator reservoir (Fastbind Hot-Melt Type 1)
•
Τhe machine has reached operating temperature (warm-up time is 20 min)
•
Τhat you are using a softcover nipping tool (marked with "S")
•
Τhe turntable is in normal position (the hand lever in the N-position)
•
Either soft or hardcover paperguide is in place
SILICON PAPER METHOD
1. Open the clamp. Use silicon paper as a cover and insert it between the table and clamp. Note
that the silicon paper must cover the spine area from both sides to protect the positioning
deck. Moreover, nipping is easier if the silicon paper is so long that extends over the nipping
plate.
2. Knock up and jog the pages that make up the scratch pad. Place the papers between the
cover and clamp. Adjust the block from the top and side and align it against the paper
guide.
3. Close and lock the clamp. Turn the table over.
4. Apply hot melt by using the four step method.
5. Immediately after hot melt application, tip the turntable back into starting position. To form
the spine, push the folding handle down fi rmly for 1-3 seconds.
6. Open the clamp and remove the book by lifting the turntable slightly with the clamp
handle.
WITHOUT SILICON PAPER -METHOD
1. Open the clamp. Knock up and jog the pages that make up the scratch pad.
2. Place the papers between the clamp and turntable. Adjust the block from the top and side
and align it against the paper guide.
3. Close and lock the clamp. Turn the table over.
4. Apply hot melt by using the four step method.
5. Let the adhesive cool down for 20 seconds before the turntable is rotated back into start-
ing position. Otherwise the block will be glued to the positioning deck when the table is
rotated back!
6. Tip the turntable back into starting position. Open the clamp and turn the book over. Remove
the book by lifting the turntable slightly with the clamp handle.
