IV. Preparing
the planer for use
•
WARNING
y Prior to starting the tool, carefully read the entire user's
manual before first use and keep it with the product
so that the user can become acquainted with it. If you
lend or sell the product to somebody, include this user's
manual with it. Prevent this user's manual from being
damaged. The manufacturer takes no responsibility for
damages or injuries arising from use that is in contra-
diction to this user's manual. Before using this applian-
ce, first acquaint yourself with all the control elements
and parts as well as how to turn it off immediately
in the event of a dangerous situation arising. Before
using, first check that all parts are firmly attached and
check that no part of the appliance, such as for example
safety protective elements, is damaged or incorrectly
installed, or missing. Damage is also considered to con-
stitute damaged or degraded insulation on the power
cord. Do not use a tool with damaged or missing parts
and have it repaired or replaced at an authorised service
centre for the Extol® brand - see chapter Servicing and
maintenance, or the website address at the introduc-
tion to this user's manual.
•
WARNING
y Carry out assembly or maintenance/repairs with the el.
power cord disconnected.
ADJUSTING DEPTH OF CUT
y The depth of cut is set by turning the screw (1) by setting
the division mark on the scale of the knob before the
arrow (fig. 2, position 2). One division mark represents
a cut depth of 0.25 mm, whilst the depth of cut can be
set in the range 0-3 mm. Turning the knob changes the
depth of the blade which cuts away material.
•
ATTENTION
y To achieve the optimal planing result (surface appea-
rance), the depth of cut per single run should not be
greater than approx. 1.7 mm (depend on the hardness
of the wood being planed).
To achieve a greater degree of removal (depth of cut)
than specified above, it is necessary to make several
passes in order to achieve the required depth.
EN
y Determine the optimal depth of cut setting with
respect to the quality of the planed material on a samp-
le piece of material.
SETTING PLANING WIDTH
y If it is necessary to maintain an even planing width, use
the side guide rail that is included with the planer to set
the width, as shown in fig.3.
y Install the side guide rail on to the planer as shown in
fig. 4 and secure it using the screw (1) according to fig. 4.
Set the required planing width using the travel and then
lock the travel in place using the wing nut located on the
underside of the side guide rail (fig. 4, position 2).
SETTING HALF-GROOVE DEPTH
y The construction of the planer enables a half-groove
depth of up to 8 mm to be made, as shown in fig. 5.
•
ATTENTION
y The depth of the half-groove should be performed, in
order to achieve a greater depth of the half-groove,
not in a single pass of the planer, but rather split into
several passes. When planing half-grooves, an audible
overloading of the motor and an evident reduction in
motor speed should not occur.
y If an even half-groove width needs to be maintained, the pla-
ner can also be used together with a side guide rail (fig. 3).
CONNECTION DUST EXTRACTION
y Set the button for toggling dust extraction into the out-
let on the left or right side (fig. 1, position 5) as requi-
red based on which side the dust should be extracted.
Insert an external dust extraction hose adapter into the
hole of the dust outlet (fig. 1, position 1).
y Use external dust extraction during work because the
inhalation of dust is damaging to health, in particular
from chemically treated materials. Dust from hard
wood is considered to be a carcinogen.
y During work, use certified respiratory tract protection with a
sufficient level of protection. For machining soft woods wit-
hout chemical treatment use a respirator with FFP2 filtration
efficiency, for machining hard woods and chemically treated
wood use a respirator with FFP3 filtration efficiency.
y Use an industrial technical dust vacuum cleaner to
extract the dust.

ASSEMBLING THE STAND
1) Screw the uprights to the base plate and secure them
properly (fig. 6).
2) Through the hole in the top part of the upright, screw
on the planer, which is equipped with a hole on each
side, to the uprights, and also screw the side guide rail
seated against the planer base plate, and also the tilt
open cover of the planer head with the return spring,
fig. 7. Subsequently, connect the planer to external
dust extraction via the hose adapter (fig. 1, position 1).
•
WARNING
y Ensure that all parts of the planer are securely
attached.
•
WARNING
y Ensure that the planer head cover on the return
spring returns back after being tilted out so that
the planer head is covered. If the planer head cover
does not automatically return back, then the stand
must not be used and must be replaced with a fla-
wless original unit from the manufacturer.
3) On to a pulled down trigger switch (without the
power cord being connected to a power socket),
slide on the plastic C-shaped part to secure the trigger
switch in the pulled down position so that the opera-
tor has both hands free for work (fig. 8).
•
ATTENTION
y The plastic C-shaped part for securing the trigger
switch in the pulled down position must only be
used when using the planer with the stand. When
holding the planer in your hand (hand planing), the
trigger switch must not be secured in the pulled
down position.
V. Method of work
1) Prior to starting the planer, first properly secure the
planed material in place using suitable clamping
elements and check that there are no foreign object
inside the planed material, e.g. nails, etc. and that the
material does not contain splintered parts that could
be expelled by the planer blade upon contact and
result in injury to persons.
49
2) Inspect the base plate, check that the planer blade
is securely attached and that it is undamaged and
sharp. If the blade is loose, tighten it using an
installation key, or if damaged replace it with a per-
fect original blade from the manufacturer according
to chapter Maintenance and service. Have a blunt
blade professionally sharpened. A damaged blade
must not be repaired.
•
WARNING
y During work, use certified eye, ear, hearing and
breathing protection and gloves with a sufficient
level of protection.
3) Before connecting the planer to a power source, first
check that the voltage and frequency in the power
socket corresponds to the range 230-240 V ~50 Hz.
The planer can be used in this specified voltage range
and at this specified frequency.
•
ATTENTION
y The base plate of the planer is in the rear part
equipped with a rest lug, (fig. 9, position 1), which
prevents contact of the planer blade with the planed
surface and thereby prevents damaging the surface
of the planed material by the planer blade. To extend
the support lug, it is necessary to lift up the planer
4) Hold the planer with both hands by the front and
main handle and position the front part of the planer
plate on the planed surface so that the planer blade is
not in contact with the planed material because the
planer blade must only come into contact with the
planed material when it is running.
•
ATTENTION
y Planing must be performed along the direction of
the wood fibres (grain) (see fig. 10), not crosswise,
otherwise this could result in dangerous situations.
5) If the planer is used with the side guide rail, attach
the side guide rail to the edge of the planed material
(fig. 3).
6) Start the planer by pressing the trigger lock release
button and only then the trigger.
7) Guide the planer without applying downward pre-
ssure, at an appropriate speed relative to the material
and the depth of cut.
