GENERAL SAFETY INFORMATION
Intended Use
The 3M
Welding Shield Kit 7990/7990-AM on the 3M
Facepiece Respirators. The electronic lens assembly is suitable for any type of welding
except oxyacetylene welding, laser welding, plasma cutting, grinding
and low current welding (less than 5 amps).
Important
These instructions provide information about the 3M electronic lens assembly only.
Before use, the wearer must read and understand these User Instructions and the User
Instructions provided with the 3M 7800S and 7800S-AM Series full facepieces and 3M
clip-on welding shield kit 7990/7990-AM. Keep these instructions for reference.
All respirator components must be inspected before each use to ensure good
operating condition. Any damaged or defective parts must be replaced before use.
CAUTION:
• Only operate the 3M electronic lens assembly at temperatures between -5°C (23°F)
and +55°C (131°F).
• Do not store near a heat source or in direct sunlight.
• Do not clean with solvents. Do not immerse in liquids.
• Clean with household glass cleaners.
• Always check the condition of the safety plates. Replace before use if they
are cracked, pitted, or scratched.
• A cover plate, which meets ANSI Z87.1-1989 requirements for impact and
penetration, must be placed in front of the electronic lens to help prevent injury
in the event of glass breakage.

Assemble the lens parts
Via Anhangüera, km 110 - Sumaré - SP
as shown in figure 1.

1. Install two AAA alkaline
batteries into the electronic lens.
2. Insert the cover plate
L-152, lens gasket 7992
and electronic lens and
adapter under the retaining
clips of the lens holder.
Note: The appropriate plates must be installed on the inside and outside of the
electronic lens to prevent damage.
3. Set the shade control to the level that is appropriate for the welding application.
4. Turn the unit on by pressing the power switch. Once on, the unit should turn to
a green shade. If not, replace the batteries.
5. Set sensitivity knob to mid-range. Adjust sensitivity to desired setting. To increase,

turn knob clockwise. To decrease, turn counterclockwise.
