• Wear protective gloves, safety glasses, close-fitting clothes
and hair protection (for long hair).
• Always disconnet plug from power source before making
any adjustment or changing any accessory.
WHEN CONNECTING NEW 3-PIN PLUG (U.K. ONLY):
• Do not connect the blue (= neutral) or brown (= live) wire in
the cord of this tool to the earth terminal of the plug.
• If for any reason the old plug is cut off the cord of this tool, it
must be disposed of safety and not left unattended.
Auxiliary handle (see figure 5)
The auxiliary handle I can be adjusted to suit the working po-
sition:
- loosen knob J almost completely
- adjust handle I to desired position tighten knob J firmly
Dust extraction (see figure 4)
External dust extraction (accessory)
The machine can be plugged directly into the receptacle of
an all-purpose vacuum cleaner with remote starting control.
The vacuum cleaner starts automatically when the machine is
switched on.
The vacuum cleaner must be suitable for the material to be
worked.
When vacuuming dry dust that is especially detrimental to health
or carcinogenic, use a special vacuum cleaner.
For external dust extraction with a vacuum cleaner, an extraction
adapter must be used as required. Insert extraction adapter and
vacuum connection firmly.
Dust extraction with an attached dustbag
For small sanding jobs, a dustbag G can be used. If your tool is
equipped with a dustbag, empty it frequently and after com-
pletion of sanding.
Be particularly careful when disposing of dust, as materials in
fine particle form may be explosive.
Do not throw sanding dust on an open fire. Spontaneous com-
bustion may in time, result from mixture of oil or water with dust
particles.
Do not use dustbag/vacuum cleaner when sanding metal.
Changing the Sanding Belt (see figure 3)
Before any work on the machine itself, pull the mains plug.
Swivel out the clamping lever D fully. The sanding belt is now
loose and can be taken off.
Mount a new sanding belt.
The arrows on the inside of the sanding belt and the ma-
chine housing should indicate the same direction.
Swivel the clamping lever D back again to its original position.
Lift the machine from where it is lying and switch it on. Correct
the position of the belt by pressing the adjusting knob F until the
edge of the sanding belt runs flush with the backing plate.
Make sure that the sanding belt does not rub into the housing.
Check the position of the sanding belt regularly and if necessary,
correct it again using the adjusting knob F.
Store sanding belts only hanging; avoid creasing, as this makes
the belts unusable!

Starting operation

Observe correct mains voltage: The voltage of the power
source must agree with the voltage specified on the nameplate
of the machine.Equipment marked with 230 V can also be con-
nected to 220 V.
Switching On and Off
To start the machine, press the On/Off switch A and keep it de-
pressed.
Lock the pushed On/Off switch A by pressing the lock-on but-
ton B.
To switch off the machine, release the On/Off switch A or, when
locked on with the lock-on button B, briefly press the On/Off
switch A and then release.
Speed and Sanding Belt Pre-selection
(see figure 2)
The necessary belt speed can be pre-selected with thumbwheel
C, even during operation.
The required belt speed depends on the material being sanded
and is to be determined by practical testing.
Operating Instructions (see figure 6)
Removal rate and surface quality are determined by the speed
and grade of the sanding belt. The higher the belt speed, the
more material is removed and the finer the sanded surface.
Work using the least possible sanding pressure; the machine's
own weight is sufficient for a good sanding performance. This
gives longer life to the sanding belt, makes the workpiece sur-
face smoother and reduces the energy consumption.
Application Advice
Apply the machine to the workpiece only when switched on.
Work with moderate feed and carry out the sanding with parallel
and overlapping strokes. Sand in the direction of the grain; sand-
ing across the grain produces an uneven sanding effect.
For sanding all other surfaces move the tool in oval movements
over the material.
Particularly when sanding coats of varnish, it is possible that
these melt and smear the surface of the workpiece and the
sanding belt. Therefore sanding dust must be extracted as de-
scribed under "Dust Extraction".
Worn, clogged or torn sanding belts can damage the workpiece.
The sanding belts should therefore be changed in good time.
! A sanding belt used for sanding metal should not be
used for other materials.
For stationary use mount tool on workbench or vice (see figure
7) Mount sanding frame L (SKIL accessory) for equalizing sur-
faces without scratches or grooves, and ensure it is in place se-
curely (see figure 8).
Sanding frame L becomes hot during use; do not touch it
before it has cooled down.
Never use the same sanding belt for wood and metal.
Recommended sanding belts grits:
Coarse
– for removing paint
– for sanding of extremely rough wood
Medium
– for sanding of rough or plain wood
