MAGDEBURG HEMISPHERES
Description
Two plastic moulded hemispheres of about 100mm diameter, both having
especially designed handles for better griping at their top. One of the two
hemispheres has a plastic stopcock for pumping out air for generating
vacuum inside the hemispheres. A rubber gasket to maintain the vacuum
is provided with the apparatus. The lightweight plastic construction makes
them easy to handle and convenient to use. It can be easily connected to
any suitable vacuum pump for evacuation.

Aim: This apparatus has been designed to demonstrate the tremendous
pressure of atmosphere on an evacuated object.
Other items required: Hand operated / Motor driven vacuum pump
Procedure
1. Join both hemispheres placing the rubber gasket in the joining area.
2. Generate vacuum inside the hemispheres by means of a vacuum pump
and close the stopcock.
3. Try to separate both hemispheres by pulling from each of the handles.
Check the impossibility of separate the hemispheres due to the power of
atmospheric pressure.
4. Open the stopcock and let the air in again and check that this way it is
very easy to separate both hemispheres.
