User Instructions
The user must read, understand and follow this instruction manual
before using this equipment. This manual must be kept in a safe
place for future reference and inspection/recertification records
and should be used as part of an employee training program. It is
essential for the safety of the user that if the SRL is resold outside the
original country of destination the reseller shall provide instructions
for use, maintenance, periodic examination and for repair in the
language of the country in which the device will be used.
Latchways SRL shall only be used by a person who is trained and competent
in its safe use. Contact Latchways if you have any concerns regarding the use,
maintenance, applications or operation of this device.
Fitness and age significantly affect a person's ability to safely withstand fall
arrest loads. Only people who are physically and mentally fit and healthy, not
under the influence of drugs or alcohol are permitted to use this equipment. If
you are uncertain about your ability, consult your doctor. Latchways SRLs must
not be used by pregnant women or minors.
Intended purpose: The Self Retractable Lifeline (SRL) in accordance with
EN360:2002 is intended to be used as a connecting element within a personal
fall arrest system. It must be used vertically in situations where user mobility
is required and fall protection is needed - inspection, general construction and
maintenance work etc.
Product Limitations: Latchways SRL shall not be used outside its limitations,
or any purpose other than that for which it is intended. All maintenance work is
to be conducted by an authorised person. Do not attempt to modify or repair the
equipment. Failure to follow these instructions or misuse of this equipment may
result in serious injury or death.

1 The SRL is for a single user only, only one person can be connected
at any time

.
2 Maximum user weight (including tools) is 140 kg
3 SRL must be protected from fire, acids, caustic solutions, welding flames,
sparks or similar.
4 Latchways SRLs can be used in temperatures ranging from
-30°C to +50°C.
5 This device should be positioned as vertically as possible above
the position of the user and used at an angle that is no more than 30° to
the vertical
C
.
6 The SRL must not be used if there is any risk of the SRL contacting
high voltage power lines. This warning also applies to webbing type
devices as moisture can be absorbed by the lifeline providing a path for
electrical current.
7 Latchways recommends that the SRL should not be used in conjunction
with a caged ladder.
HSE research has previously found that caged ladders (i.e. ladders with
hoops) could not provide positive fall arrest capability. Further research
has shown that there is a risk of the user striking the cage in the event of
a fall or the caged ladder interfering with the performance of a Fall Arrest
System. In addition to this, rescue of a casualty could be hindered by the
caged ladder.
8 ManSafe Cable SRL's are suitable for use in areas in which explosive
atmospheres caused by mixtures of air and gases, vapours or mists or
by air/dusts mixtures are likely to occur, as per BS EN 13463-1:2001
equipment group II, category 2 (
System requirements: A fall arrest system comprises of a structural anchor
point, full body harness, connector (karabiner/hook) and SRL. Ensure all
elements in the system are used only as specified by the manufacturer. It

is essential for safety that the anchor device and anchor point should always
be positioned, and work carried out in such a way, as to minimise both the
potential for a fall and potential fall distance.
WARNING! Incompatible components can lead to connectors
accidentally disengaging. Always ensure all connectors are correctly
engaged and locked.
1 Connectors must conform to EN 362 and be self closing and self locking.
2 A full body harnesses conforming to EN 361 must be worn when using
Latchways SRL.
3 The anchorage structure must be able to sustain a minimum force of 10 kN
D
. Latchways recommends using a certified anchor point. Refer to EN
795. If more than one personal fall arrest system is attached to the same
supporting structure then the former strength
requirement has to be multiplied by the number
of personal fall arrest systems attached to the
supporting structure.
4 A minimum of 3 m from the working level to
the nearest obstruction, lower level or ground
underneath a hazard should be maintained.
5 An emergency rescue plan must be in place, to
be implemented in the event of a fall.
NOTE: Selection of the anchor point position must take in to account any risks
posed by moving machinery and pendulum falls. To ensure positive locking of
the SRL a clear, unobstructed fall path is necessary. Do not use the SRL when
working on such materials as sand or grain, as this may not allow sufficient
speed to cause the SRL to lock in the event of a fall. It is essential for safety to
verify the free space required beneath the user at the workplace before each
occasion of use, so that, in the event of a fall there will be no collision with the
ground or other obstacle in the fall path.
Operation and use: Attach the SRL overhead to a suitable anchorage
or anchorage connector. Perform a pre-use check of the equipment,
to ensure that it operates correctly. To check operation pull smoothly on the
lifeline listening for the audible clicking, then pull sharply on the lifeline to
engage the locking mechanism.
Connect the self locking snap hook
on the end of the lifeline to the
designated fall arrest attachment
point of a full body harness
E
.
Exception: Either end of the 2m
Webbing SRL may be attached to
the designated fall arrest attachment
point of a full body harness–this only applies to the 2m webbing SRL.
Once connected to the SRL the user is free to move about the working
area. The lifeline will extract and retract without hesitation. If the lifeline is
prevented from retracting during normal use, extract the lifeline fully and allow
it to retract under tension. Then check the locking function of the device. If
the lifeline continues to not retract fully then return the SRL to an authorised
person for inspection and recertification. An increase in fall distance can occur
if the lifeline is prevented from retracting, this must be avoided.
F
1 Never attach an additional lanyard or similar component to lengthen the line.
2 Do not allow the lifeline to pass through legs or under arms.
3 This product is intended for overhead applications only. Never use this
product for ground level attachments or cable systems

4 Do not allow the lifeline to be in contact with or rub against sharp edges.
NOTE: When the SRL is not in use, do not allow the lifeline to be fully extracted
for long periods of time as this may cause weakening of the retraction spring.
Do not let go of the lifeline as it will retract at high speed potentially damaging
