The following items are required for cleaning:
protective clothing, gloves and goggles
a suitable funnel
a funnel stand, minimal height 70 cm
a graduated jug of at least 2 litres capacity
a suitable vessel for the disposal of the acetic acid
acetic acid, 10 to 50 %
tape water for rinsing
Warning:
Disconnect the apparatus from the mains by removing the plug from the socket
before cleaning. There is a risk of corrosive burns. Wear protective clothing, gloves
and goggles during the cleaning process. Dispose of the acetic acid in accordance
with approved procedures. For your personal safety we recommend disconnecting
the mains supply before cleaning. Keep your reservoir bottle connected. Allow the
water still to cool down completely. We recommend to mark the apparatus with a
label: "Do not switch on! Cleaning with acid."

5.9.1 Cleaning the evaporator

Drain the water through the outlet valve (6) after the apparatus has
cooled down completely.
Close the valve (6)
Now hang the other end of the tubing connected with the outlet valve (6)
into the vessel for the disposal of the acetic acid. For safety reasons place
the vessel into a collection tray.
Firmly screw on the protective cap (2) on the pressure equalization
opening of the level tube (3).
Insert the funnel into the free end of the tubing leading to the overflow
connection (5). If necessary, immerse the tubing into hot water (approx.
80 °C) for about 3 minutes before fitting. Make sure the funnel fits tightly!
Now insert the funnel in the stand. The lower end of the funnel cone must
be on the same level as the distillate drain (1) – see picture on the next
page.
Use the graduated jug to pour approx. one litre of acetic acid (10 to 50 %)
into the funnel. Do not fill up the funnel with more than a third of its
capacity to avoid spilling. Do not fill the evaporator to a higher level than
the lower end of the distillate drain (1). You may regulate the filling speed
as follows: To speed up the filling of the evaporator, place the funnel into
a higher position. Place the funnel in a lower position to control the rate of
addition of acid as it approaches the lower edge of the distillate drain
tube (1), which is the point that must not be exceeded.
