PD Port vs. External Power Adapter
The PoE-Powered 5-Port Gigabit Switch with PoE Passthrough (561082) is designed to receive
data and power on Port 1, and then provide data connection and power to connected PoE
devices on Ports 2, 3, 4 and 5. Additionally, however, here's why you'll find that an external
power adapter is included.
When you connect a PoE injector or PoE switch to Port 1 (PD) of this 561082 Switch (without
the power adapter), this Switch can receive up to 30 watts of power on that port — less if the
connected PoE device isn't capable of sending that much power on one port. Of this 30 watts
(incoming), this 561082 Switch uses some watts for itself, and can deliver the rest to other PoE
devices connected to it (outgoing). That is roughly 26 watts available for four ports, which is an
average of 6.5 watts. That is enough to power as many as four network cameras or VoIP phones,
as long as they do not need more power than 6.5 watts each.
Now, if you want to add a device like a high-performance Gigabit Wireless AC access point,
then you are going to need a lot more power. In these situations, you can use the external
adapter. When that is connected, the maximum power budget rises from 30 watts to 68 watts.

PoE Pinout
The IEEE 802.3af/at standard mandates that any PSE port (PoE injector or switch port) must
support either of two pinouts, which are referred to as alternative A and B or mode A and B.
The Intellinet PoE-Powered 5-Port Gigabit Switch with PoE Passthrough supports alternative
A.
The IEEE 802.3af/at standard also requires that PoE devices such as VoIP phones or network
cameras (PD) support both modes A and B, which allows you to connect any IEEE 802/3af/
at-compliant PoE devices to the Intellinet 5-Port Gigabit Switch with PoE Passthrough with-
out worrying about the PoE pinout.
