WARNING
When working on air system components the following precautions should be observed.
1. Stop engine when working under a vehicle. Always block the vehicle wheels against a
fore or aft roll. Bleeding off system air pressure may cause the vehicle to roll. Keep
hand away from brake chamber push rods and brake adjusters; they may apply as
system pressure drops.
2. Never connect or disconnect a hose or line containing air pressure. It may whip as air
escapes. Never remove a component or a pipe plug unless you are certain all system
air pressure has been exhausted.
3. Never exceed recommended working air pressure and always wear safety glasses
when working with air pressure. Never look directly into component ports or direct a
pressurized air flow at anyone.
4. Never attempt to disassemble a component until you have read and understood all
recommended procedures. Some components contain powerful springs and injury can
result if not properly disassembled. Use only proper tools and observe all precautions
pertaining to the use of those tools.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
!
CAUTION
The following installation instructions are suggested to give optimum performance.
Deviations from these suggestions may affect the operation of the unit.
DETERMINE CORRECT LOCATION AND POSITION:
The location of the air dryer should be such that the following conditions exist.
1. The dryer can be mounted in any position from vertical to 7º off the horizontal
2. The purge exit port should be the lowest point on the dryer.
3. Inlet temperature should not exceed 150ºF. A compressor discharge line greater than six
feet will normally produce temperatures less than 150ºF.
4. The Pure Air dryer is serviceable from either end however, clearance is required for
removal of the canister. Allow 14 inches for top servicing or 12 inches for bottom
servicing.
5. Do not mount the dryer near any heat producing source such as the engine exhaust
manifold, radiator or in the engine compartment. The ideal location is one which allows
free flow of air around the dryer.
6. It is best to locate the dryer as low as possible so the line from the compressor slopes
downward, avoiding freeze-up in this line.
MOUNTING THE AIR DRYER:
Before beginning any installation, block vehicle wheels and drain all air reservoirs.
1. The mounting brackets on the air dryer can be moved, however, they should not be
spaced closer than seven inches for proper support.
2. Use the assembly with the brackets as a template if mounting holes are to be drilled.
3. Fasten the purge adapter to the purge port using (3) self-tapping #10-24 cap screws.
Torque to 60 inch lbs. If unit is to be vertically mounted, use adapter as is. If unit is
horizontally mounted, cut off the 90º portion of the elbow at the notch
4. Fasten the dryer to the vehicle with grade 5 or better 3/8 cap screws and nuts and
tighten to 30 foot lbs.
5. After tightening the bracket to the vehicle, tighten the center bracket screw to 120 inch lbs.
CONNECTING AIR LINES:
1. Connect the line from the compressor to the air dryer port on the end of the dryer marked
(see figure 2).
"inlet". Avoid any loops or sharp bends which may form water traps.
2. Connect the line from the first air reservoir to the same end of the air dryer at the port
marked "outlet".
3. The relief valve is set for 150 psi and must not be removed.
4. Connect a line (3/16 I.D. max., 1/8 I.D. preferred) from the unloader port of the
compressor governor to the control port on the dryer, located at the lower end. Avoid
loops or sharp bends in this line to lessen the chance of water traps.
5. If desired, a one inch I.D. line can be connected to the purge adapter to direct the
contaminants away from the vehicle

Note: The port marked "purge" is for special applications and should not be used.
