Wireless Remote Temperature Sensor
Installation and Operation Manual
The SmartSense® SMART-R-06 is a wireless remote temperature sensor with
many advanced capabilities. It is designed to work with the SMART 1000,
SMART 2000, SMART 3000 and SMART 4000 thermostats. It also can be
used with other wall thermostats that can use a 10K Type II NTC sensor.
Please take time to read and understand these instructions as proper
installation of the SMART-R-06 will ensure an accurate and reliable
temperature sensor.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
WARNING: ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD – Turn off power
at the main power source by unscrewing fuse
or switching circuit breaker to the OFF position
before installing, removing, or cleaning this
thermostat.

device should be installed by a qualified
service technician with due regard for safety
as improper installation could result in a fire
and electric shock hazard.
WARNING: FIRE AND ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD – This is
a 24V AC low-voltage thermostat. Do not install
on voltages higher than 30V AC.
• Do not switch system to cool if the temperature is below 50°F (10°C).
This can damage your cooling system and may cause personal injury.
• Do not short (jumper) across terminals on the gas valve or at the system
control to test installation. This will damage the thermostat and void
the warranty.
• Do not connect ground to any terminal in this unit.
• All wiring must conform to local and national building and electrical
codes and ordinances.
• Use this thermostat and sensor only as described in the manual.
OVERVIEW
The SMART-R-06 includes: a temperature sensor, a low powered radio
transmitter, two AAA batteries, and a LED to indicate status. The sensor
transmits temperature data to a paired receiver.
The receiver is powered by 24V AC and provides temperature data to the
thermostat's remote temperature sensor terminals. Three LEDs on the
receiver provide visual indication of the power, data, and status functions.
SET-UP
The SMART-R-06 remote sensor is made up of two parts, the battery
powered temperature sensor transmitter and the 24V AC powered
temperature receiver module. The sensor and receiver use matched pairs
to communicate. Temperature information is sent from the sensor to the
receiver module via 433 MHZ RF signal. The temperature data is then
read by the thermostat.

PAIRING
The SMART-R-06 sensor transmitter and receiver module must be "paired"
to communicate and transmit temperature data. Begin by setting the DIP
switches on both the receiver and transmitter to the same value (code).
The transmitter and receiver both have a red switch block with five white
switches. These switches are marked 1 to 5. Before inserting batteries or
powering the receiver, set the same combination of On and Off switches
on both the transmitter and receiver switch blocks to pair the two
devices. This must done while powered down as these switch settings
are "remembered" on power up.
By following these steps, there is visual confirmation of the pairing to
confirm the sensor and receiver set are paired. The sensor status LED
will illuminate after the test/after hours button is pressed if the pairing
with the receiver is correct.
In addition, pairing ensures no cross talk if there are multiple sensors with
different switch combinations within a single building.
One sensor can communicate with multiple receivers if they use the same
pairing combination. This permits outside air data to be sent from one
sensor to multiple thermostats within a building.
OPERATING
Sensor - The sensor transmits temperature data
to a paired receiver once every five minutes
or with every 0.5c of measured temperature
change; what ever occurs first.
The communication between the sensor
and receiver is bi-directional. After sending
temperature data to the receiver, the sensor
waits for acknowledgment of the data being
received. If acknowledgment is NOT received,
the sensor will continue to re-transmit the data.
To confirm communication between the sensor and the receiver, press
the button on the bottom of the sensor for three seconds. If the status
LED on the sensor illuminates, then communication between the sensor
and receiver is confirmed.
The sensor is powered by two AAA Alkaline batteries. When using the
sensor with the SmartSense SMART 1000, SMART 2000, SMART 3000 and
SMART 4000 thermostats, the status button on the bottom of the sensor
also initiates the after hours run timer. The SMART-R-06 status LEDs will light
when the receiver confirms the after hours run signal has been received.
Receiver - The receiver has three LED indication
lights; power, data, status.
Power Shows the sensor is powered.
Data Flashes when it receives data from
the sensor.
Status Illuminates when sensor test A/H button
on sensor is pressed. Flashes when low
battery condition is detected.
If no valid temperature data has been received for 10 minutes, or a low
battery condition is measured, the receiver will hold the temperature
output to the thermostat continually to a fixed 69.8°F (21°C).
When the sensor battery is low, the status light on the receiver will flash
continually.
WIRING
The SmartSense SMART 1000, SMART 2000, SMART 3000 and
SMART 4000 are powered by 24V AC and simulate a standard two wire
sensor (10K NTC Type II) to the receiver it is connected to. The wiring
is not polarity dependent. Connect the SMART-R-06 to 24V AC power
and the T1 T2 terminals to the thermostat or zoning systems remote or
outside air sensor terminals as required.

APERÇU
Le SMART-R-06 est constitué : d'un capteur de température, un émetteur
radio de faible puissance, de deux piles AAA, et d'un voyant à LED pour
indiquer sa situation de fonctionnement en cours. Le capteur transmet les
températures à un récepteur couplé.
Le récepteur est alimenté en 24V AC, et envoie les températures aux
bornes du télécapteur de températures du thermostat. Trois voyants à
LED se trouvant sur le récepteur, indiquent les fonctions d'alimentation,
données et de situation de fonctionnement.
INSTALLATION
Le télécapteur SMART-R-06 se compose de deux parties ; l'émetteur
du capteur de température, alimenté par batterie, et le récepteur de
température alimenté en 24V AC. Le capteur et le récepteur utilisent des
paires jumelées pour communiquer. Les températures sont transmises du
capteur au récepteur via un signal FR de 433 MHz. Les températures sont
ensuite lues par le thermostat.

L'émetteur et le récepteur du capteur SMART-R-06, doivent être « jumelés »
pour communiquer et transmettre les températures. Commencez par
régler les commutateurs DIP sur le récepteur et l'émetteur en les mettant
sur la même valeur (code).
L'émetteur et le récepteur disposent tous les deux d'un bornier rouge à
cinq interrupteurs blancs. Ces borniers sont marqués 1 à 5. Avant de mettre
les piles ou d'allumer le récepteur, mettez la même combinaison
d'interrupteurs On et Off sur les borniers de l'émetteur et du commutateur,
pour jumeler les deux appareils. Cela doit être fait en éteignant, car ces
réglages sont « en mémoire » lors de la mise sous tension.
En suivant ces étapes, le jumelage du capteur et du récepteur est confirmé
visuellement. Le voyant LED de situation du capteur s'allume après avoir
appuyé sur le bouton de test / hors heures normales, si le jumelage avec le
récepteur est correct.
En outre, le jumelage garantit l'absence d'interférences, en présence de
plusieurs capteurs à différentes combinaisons d'interrupteurs dans un seul
bâtiment.
Un capteur peut communiquer avec plusieurs récepteurs s'ils utilisent la
même combinaison de jumelage. Cela permet à la température de l'air
extérieur d'être envoyée d'un capteur, à plusieurs thermostats à l'intérieur
d'un bâtiment.
