SERVICING THE PURE AIR DRYER FROM THE
GOVERNOR/PURGE VALVE END
The Pure Air Dryer can be completely overhauled while installed on the
vehicle, if there is adequate clearance from either end:
14" Clearance Required For Top End Servicing
12" Clearance Required For Bottom End Servicing
LUBRICATE ALL "O"-RINGS AND SEALS PRIOR TO SERVICING
1. Drain all air from the vehicle reservoirs. Loosen the line on the
dryer marked "inlet" to ensure no pressure remains in the unit.
2. Disconnect the heater wires and purge air line from the lower
cover and move to one side.
3. Remove the six 1/2" hex flange nuts retaining the lower cover.
Tap the cover lightly with a plastic or brass hammer to loosen.
Lower the cover.
4. To service the lower cover:
a. Remove the purge exhaust elbow fitting by removing the
three screws.
b. Insert a 1" O.D. nut in the purge valve.
c. Using the nut as a tool, turn the purge valve counter-clockwise
to remove.
d. Remove the center screw in the purge valve seat and discard
the seat.
e. Remove the "O"-Rings from the purge valve body and the
purge piston. Discard both "O"-Rings.
f.
Discard the large "O"-Ring on the cover.
5. To reassemble the lower cover:
a. Clean the entire cover and purge valve components with a
clean cloth.
b. Install new lubricated "O"-Rings on the purge piston and
purge valve body (Item 8 and Item 9 - Kit Contents).

5. To reassemble the lower cover (cont'd):
c. Install new purge valve seat (Item 10 - Kit Contents). Start
the purge valve screw by hand and torque to 50-80 in.lbs.
d. Using the 1" O.D. nut as a tool, install the purge valve into
the lower cover. Tighten and torque to 35-50 ft.lbs.
e. Install purge exhaust elbow fitting with the three screws and
torque the screws to 30-50 in.lbs.
f.
Set aside the complete lower cover.
6. Pull the center cylinder from the dryer. The intermediate
aluminum cylinder must also be removed.
7. To service the desiccant canister:
a. Remove the spring from the top of the desiccant follower,
clean and set aside for re-use.
b. Remove the follower from the top of the desiccant. Clean
and set aside for re-use.
c. Pull the desiccant from the inner canister. Remove used
loose desiccant by shaking it into a waste receptacle.
d. Remove the screw retaining the filter element on the
bottom of the center tube assembly.
e. Discard the filter element.
f.
Set aside entire assembly.
8. To reassemble the desiccant canister:
a. Clean the center tube unit and the intermediate cylinder
with a clean cloth.
b. Install a new filter element (Item 1 - Kit Contents) on the
base of the center tube unit with the screw and plastic
follower. Tighten the screw and torque to 60-90 in.lbs.
