Room measurements verifi cation
IMPORTANT: Accurate measurements are the key to a
successful installation. Verify your measurements in order to
ensure that you have the proper length mat for the project
(Picture 1).
Mat verifi cation
The cellophane packaging on the FLEXTHERM Mat warrants the integrity of
the product. The cable cannot be returned if the seal is broken. As a quality
assurance measure, each mat has been subjected to a 1,500 V dielectric test
and a resistance test.
Before removing the cellophane and installing the system, you should test
the insulation and resistance of the cable integrated in your mat to ensure
product conformity. You will have to verify the product integrity two more
times during the installation: once the mat is secured to the floor and once
the flooring is installed. These tests are conducted three times to make
certain that no damage has been caused to the cable during the different
stages of installation.
Resistance verifi cation
Use an appropriate multimeter to measure the resistance between the black
leads. If an automatic multimeter is used the reading will be taken instantly.
If the multimeter is not automatic, set it to 200 Ω for a cable under 200 Ω or
at the higher value for a cable over 200 Ω. The resistance value of the cable
is indicated on the label attached to the end of the cold lead. Compare the
test result with the resistance indicated on the label. Record the results on
the limited warranty card. The reading should be similar to the resistance
indicated on the mat label (± 10%) (picture 2).
The cable's resistance was established in an environment at 20 °C (68 ˚F). If
you obtain a reading that does not correlate with these parameters contact
FLEXTHERM customer service at 1-800-353-9843.
Insulation verifi cation
Use a megohmmeter to verify the integrity of the cable insulation. Connect
the instrument's black cable to the system ground wire (the green lead) and
the red cable to one of the the heating elements (black leads) and then send
a 1,000 V current (picture 3). The result should read "infinite" ohms. Should

Installation Guide
there be a current leakage between the heating element and the insulation,
the instrument will indicate a result between 0 - 500 MΩ. When this test is
performed with a FLEXTEST unit, refer to the unit's reference card to help
interpret the results.

Should the results obtained not comply with the mat specifications, do
not remove the cellophane packaging and contact FLEXTHERM customer

2005.1 Multifunctional
Reference Card
Test 1: Cable insulation test
Connect the unit's black cable to the ground
wire (green wire) and the red cable to one of
the black conductors.
Rotate the dial to select the position
1000V (heating cable).
Press (hold down) the TEST button for
10 seconds.
Warning: Risk of electric shock
(do not touch the cables)
Results:
Inf. (OL)
Test 2: Cable resistance test
Connect the clips to the black wires.
Validate the result with the heating
cable's specifications located on the label.
Acceptable tolerances are between ± 10%.
Test 3: Probe sensor test
Connect leads to the probe.
Rotate the dial to select the position
The result should correspond to the value
indicated in the installation guide or on the
sensor tag.
IMPORTANT: Record the results obtained for these two tests
on the limited warranty card every time you perform them:
before removing the cellophane packaging, after the mat is
secured to the floor and after the flooring is installed. These
results must be recorded on the limited warranty card in order
to preserve the system's limited warranty.
