Preliminary electrical installation
Circuit
Floor heating systems should be connected to electrical circuits dedicated
to heating. The amperage drawn by the mat, as indicated on the product
label, will determine the required circuit intensity. Please take note that the
maximum load that can be supported by the FLEXTHERM thermostat is 15 A.
More than one circuit will be necessary should the system require more than
15 A. For a load greater than 15 A, a master/expansion conversion kit with the
appropriate number of expansion units is required. A FLEXTHERM thermostat
can control up to 10 expansion units. For further information regarding their
connection please refer to the literature included with those products, also
available on the FLEXTHERM web site at www.flextherm.com.
Electrical connection box
Determine where the thermostat connection box will be installed. It should
be in an accessible location and at an appropriate height in the room where
the system will be installed.
Use an expanded connection box or a 4 in x 4 in box for the system
connection (plan one connection box for each 15 A circuit). A 2.1 m (7 ft)
cold lead, used to make the electrical connection to the thermostat, is
located on one end of your FLEXTHERM Mat.
Drill a hole on the wall sill plate under the electrical connection box location.
Clear the hole of wood chips (picture 4). This hole will allow the cold lead and
the floor probe wires to be passed to the electrical connection box.
Note: the floor probe is included in the thermostat kit.
IMPORTANT: Connect the cable to the thermostat only once
the cable has been installed and covered.
Note: Keep ends of heating devices and kit components dry before and
during installation.
Cold lead
The cold lead is the non-heating portion of the heating cable. It is fished/
run through the wall and is used to make the connection to the thermostat.
You will recognize the cold lead as it is a flat black cable connected to the
heating cable (green) through the mechanical joint (picture 5).
Mechanical joint
Cold lead
Just like the heating cable (integrated in the mat), the mechanical joint must
be installed/secured to the floor and covered with the selected mortar or
4
self-levelling underlayment. Since the joint's diameter is greater than that
of the mat, it will be inserted into a groove in the sub-fl oor in order to avoid
unevenness when the fl oor covering is installed.
Determine and mark the location where the mechanical joint will be
fastened to the sub-floor. With the appropriate tools, make a 6 mm (1/4 in)
groove in the sub-floor. Remove all debris caused by this operation to avoid
potential damage to the cable. Glue or screw the cable's mechanical joint
into the groove (picture 6). In a multiple mat installation, repeat these steps
for each mat installed.

Installation plan

Above all, plan your installation while taking into account the above
mentioned guidelines. It is recommended to make an installation plan in
order to foresee directional changes, obstacle skirting, buffer zones, etc.
Buffer zones are areas that are not essential to heat (i.e. behind the toilet,

behind a door, or any other low traffic area) that can accommodate any
excess mat.
IMPORTANT! INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
• The heating part of the mat will be installed at a minimum
distance of:
- 13 to 25 mm (1/2 to 1 in) from the base (underside) of
a counter, fixed furniture, steps, patio doors, baths or
showers;
- 5 cm (2 in) from any walls;
- 15 cm (6 in) from toilet drains;
- 20 cm (8 in) from any other heating system, floor or wall
mounted (this does not apply to convection type heating
appliance).
• The cable must be spaced at least 13 mm (1/2 in) from any
exposed combustible surface.
• The heating cable integrated in the mesh (mat) should at no
time be overlapped, crossed, cut, shortened nor modified.
• The spacing between the runs of mat must remain
unchanged throughout the installation.
• The entire heating portion of the mat (including the
mechanical joint) must be secured to the floor and covered
with mortar or self-levelling underlayment. The heating mat
should never be, under any consideration, installed in/on
walls.
• The system should not be installed under fixed furniture or
where air does not flow freely. It should never be installed in
closets, over walls or partitions nor over cabinets.
• The heating mat should never be installed over an expansion
joint.
• The installation of the system should not be performed in an
environment where ambient air temperature is under 0 °C
(32 °F).
