Troubleshooting
Having trouble getting online? Try this first.
• Check your wireless settings on your computer or device to make sure you're connected to your personalized
network name (SSID).
• Try restarting by following these quick steps.
Unplug the modem from the electrical outlet or surge protector. Once unplugged, all the lights on the
modem should go off. If the lights are still on after you disconnect it, look to see if there is a battery backup,
and disconnect it now.
Unplug the smart router from the electrical outlet or surge protector.
Reconnect the modem to the electrical outlet or surge protector.
Wait a few minutes until it fully restarts and lights up. If you use a battery backup, reconnect it to the modem now.
Reconnect the smart router to its electrical outlet or surge protector. You should be up and running in a few
seconds.
Power light on your smart router is off? Make sure your power adapter is connected to both the smart router and
the electrical outlet or surge protector.
Internet or Ethernet port lights on your smart router off? Make sure your Ethernet cable connections are secure
on the smart router, modem and computer.

Step 1
Before you start, you'll need your Optimum ID and password. Don't know if you have an Optimum ID?
Step 1a.
Turn to Channel 903 to find out if there is already an Optimum ID associated with your account.
If you already have an Optimum ID and password, please go to optimum.net, select the
"Remember Me" option and sign in to your Optimum account.
If you need to retrieve your Optimum ID or password, go to optimum.net/myid. Sign in to your
Optimum account using this information, making sure to select the "Remember Me" option.
If you do not have an Optimum ID, go to optimum.net/id to create one. Once you've created your
ID, sign into your Optimum account, making sure to select the "Remember Me" option.

Step 1b.
You'll also need your current wireless network name (SSID)
and password. If you only have a wireless network name, but no
USB Ports
password, or if you are setting up a router for the first time, you'll
need the default network name (SSID) and password, which can
be found on the smart router, shown in the image to the right. You'll
need this information again in Step 7.
Tip: For the best possible wireless signal, place your smart router close to where you usually use your computer
or wireless device, and make sure it's not obstructed by anything, such as furniture. Also, please keep it in the
upright standing position, as shown in the image to the left.
Step 2
• Unplug the modem
from the electrical outlet or surge protector.

• If you have a battery backup connected to the modem, disconnect it now. You will know you have a
battery backup if the lights on your modem are still on after you've unplugged the modem.
Step 3
• If you have an existing router, disconnect the existing Ethernet cable between the modem and
router. Then unplug the router from the electrical outlet or surge protector and disconnect any
devices connected to the router.
• If you do not have an existing router, disconnect your current Ethernet cable between the modem
and computer.

• Retrieve the yellow Ethernet cable

sing a wireless computer, laptop or device to set up your smart router? Skip ahead to Step 5.
• Using a wired computer or laptop to set up the smart router? Connect your existing Ethernet cable
between any open yellow Ethernet LAN port on the smart router

• Plug the modem
into the electrical outlet or your existing surge protector. If you have a battery

backup, reconnect it to the modem. Now you're all done with the wiring.
• You'll know it's on when the lights begin to flicker. Give the cable modem about a
minute to power up.
Step 6
Make sure the modem is on before proceeding:
• Plug in the smart router

to the electrical outlet or surge protector. If the power light is not on,
press the power button located on the back of the router.
• Wait five minutes while the smart router checks for network updates before moving to Step 7.
Step 7
Now you're ready to set up your home network.
Step 7a. To set up a network using a wired computer or laptop:
1. Open your web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Chrome) on the computer that's
connected to the smart router and you'll be automatically directed to a welcome page.
2. To establish your personalized network, follow the steps on-screen. If you are replacing a router, you should
use your old router's network name (SSID) and password. This will automatically connect all your wireless
devices. Or, if you'd like to create a brand new network, follow the steps on-screen to create a new case-sensitive
personalized network name (SSID) and password. For this smart router you will need a password, you
cannot opt out of creating one.
Step 7b. To set up a network using a wireless computer, laptop or device:
1. Go to your WiFi settings and select the default network name (SSID) listed on the smart router. Not sure
where to find your WiFi settings on your device? Step 8, #1 can help.
2. Enter the default password.
3. Open your web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Chrome) on the computer that's
connected to the smart router and you'll be automatically directed to a welcome page.
4. To establish your personalized network, follow the steps on-screen. If you are replacing a router, you should
use your old router's network name (SSID) and password. This will automatically connect all your wireless
devices. Or, if you'd like to create a brand new network name, or if you're setting up a router for the first time,
follow the steps on-screen to create a new case-sensitive personalized network name (SSID) and password. For
this smart router you will need a password, you cannot opt out of creating one.
5. Go to your WiFi settings on your device. Select the personalized network name (SSID) you just created and
enter your password.
Now move to Step 8 to connect your wireless devices to the smart router or test out existing
devices previously connected to your old router.
Step 8
To connect wireless devices to your new home network:
1. Select your new personalized network name (SSID) from your wireless settings. Depending on your device,
you'll access wireless settings by going to:
a) iPhone: "Preferences" and "WiFi"
b) Android device: "Settings" > "Wireless Networks" or "WiFi"
c) PC: The Wireless Network Connection icon in the system tray
d) Mac: The Airport icon in the menu bar
e) When connecting other devices, like gaming consoles, wireless printers, etc., use the WPS push button
method (see device's owner's manual).
2. Enter your password and click "connect" .
To connect devices that don't have wireless capabilities:
Connect your computer to one of the router's yellow "LAN" ports using another Ethernet cable.
