INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR WIPEX TYPE 5
Application and sizes
WIPEX
®
is the trade name for a complete range of couplings for Wirsbo-PEX pipes in domestic
water, heating installations and in various industrial applications. The WIPEX-coupling is
available from dimension 25 to 110 mm in respective pressure ratings of 6 bars (0,6 MPa/84
psi) and 10 bars (1,0 MPa/140 psi).
WIPEX-pipe fi ttings are used for achieving the necessary connection combinations. The joints
are sealed with O-rings. The O-rings are supplied for every pipe fi tting with female threads.
When assembling other system components with WIPEX-couplings and pipefi ttings, seal the
threaded joints with linen yarn (scrape gently the surface of the thread tops to provide a grip for
the yarn). Note! Linen yarn should not be used for sealing a WIPEX-coupling and pipefi tting.
Too much linen yarn could break or make a crack in the WIPEX pipefi tting.
Fitting procedure
The WIPEX-coupling
1. Cut the pipe in cross section with a plastic pipe cutter. NOTE! If other method for cutting
is used, shall eventually shavings remaining inside the pipe be removed to avoid blocking
valves.
2. Chamfer the pipe bore with a burring tool or knife. This is to prevent the pipe from
damaging or pushing the O-ring out from its groove. Remove any external burrs.
3. Dismount the outer clamping sleeve, by removing the bolt and widen the outer clamping
sleeve with pliers.
4. Place the bolts head, between the pads and remove the clamping sleeve from the
coupling.
5. Mount the clamping sleeve, onto the pipe before assembly. NOTE! Make sure that the outer
clamping sleeve is positioned correctly (Check that the lips on the outer clamp is turned
towards the inner support sleeve).
6. For easier mounting of the pipe, onto the support sleeve and to prevent damaging the
O-ring, lubricate the O-ring with a suitable environmentally friendly lubricant. The pipe is
pushed all the way to the bottom, until the stop support for pipe is reached. Mount the
outer clamping sleeve, so that the locking groove on the clamping sleeve is in engagement
with the support sleeve.
7.
Tighten the WIPEX-coupling. Important to lubricate the threads on the bolt and washer with
a suitable low friction grease MoS2 or similar. To avoid thread problems when assembling
stainless or acid resistant stainless steel bolts in a screw joint, the tightening should be
done slowly by hand. If a tightening machine is used, it demands to have very low numbers
of revolutions. Use open-ended or ring spanners and slowly tighten until the pads of the
clamping sleeve are in contact with one another.
8. Note! If the pads do not come in contact, wait at least 30 minutes and tighten until the pads
are in contact with one another.

WIPEX-pipe fi ttings
Make sure that the O-ring seat is clean.
Use only the O-rings supplied with the pipefi tting.
Place the O-ring in the O-ring seat.
Tighten with hand tools, narrow bladed crocodile spanner or adjustable wrench. Tighten
until stop.
Tightness testing
Tightness testing according to current norms is to be carried out before bringing the system
into service. If standards for tightness testing are not available, then pressure test as follows:
Vent all air from the system and apply 1,5 x the normal operating pressure. Maintain this
pressure for 30 minutes and visually inspect the joints. Quickly drain off water until the
pressure falls to 0,5 x operating pressure and close the drain valve. If the pressure rises to a
constant level higher than 0,5 x operating pressure, the system is tight. Maintain this pressure
for 90 minutes and visually inspect the fi ttings during this time. A drop in pressure indicates
leakage in the system.
Installation

2
Shows where the O-ring is placed in its groove, and how the WIPEX coupling is
connected to a WIPEX Tee piece.
3
Cut the pipe in cross section with a plastic pipe cutter.
4
Chamfer the pipe bore with a burring tool or knife. Remove any external burrs.
5
Dismount the outer clamping sleeve, by removing the bolt and widden the outer
clamping sleeve with pliers.
6
Place the bolt head between the pads and remove the clamping sleeve from the
coupling.
7
Mount the other sleeve on to the pipe.
8
Mount the outer clamping sleeve, so that the locking groove on the clamping
sleeve is in engagement with the support sleeve.
9
Tighten the WIPEX-coupling. Important to lubricate the bolt threads with a low
friction grease MoS2 or similar.
10
Note! Tighten slowly by hand until the pads are in contact with one another.
