3. TRANSPORT,
STORAGE & CLEANING
When transporting the product, it must always be
protected form light and dirt and provided with suit-
able packaging (moisture-repellent material that is
impervious to light). A clean rope is less susceptible
to internal abrasion from dirt and rock particles.
Conditions of storage:
– Protected from light (UV radiation, welding
machines ...)
– Dry and clean
– At room temperature (15 - 25 °C)
– Not in the proximity of chemicals (acids, lyes, liquids,
vapours, gases, ...) and other aggressive
environments
– Protected against sharp-edged objects
Therefore, store the product dry and ventilated in
a moisture-repellent bag that is impervious to light.
For cleaning, use lukewarm water and mild-action
detergents. Then, rinse the equipment with clear
water and dry it prior to putting it into storage. Dry
the product in a natural way, not near fires or other
heat sources.
For disinfection, use only substances that do not
have an impact on the synthetic material and met-
als used.
If you fail to observe these provisions, you will be
putting yourself into danger!
4. REGULAR CHECKS
Checking the equipment at regular intervals is
absolutely necessary: your safety depends on
the effectiveness and durability of the equipment!
Before and after each use, the product should be
checked for abrasion and cuts. Also check it for
the legibility of the product labelling! The use of
damaged components or components subjected to
a fall must be discontinued at once. If there is only
the slightest doubt, the product needs to be retired
or subjected to testing and by a competent person.
Retire the rope immediately if the shealth is extremely
fuzzy. Sheath abrasion allows the core to be visible,
lumpy, hard or brittle spots occur, the rope has an
4
hourglass shape, the rope is exposed to alkalines,
oxidizing agnets, bleaches or acids or other harmful
chemicals, the rope has been subjected to unusually
high loads or falls.
Such inspections must at least comprise the
following:
– Check of general state: age, completeness, soiling,
correct assembly
– Check of label: Does it exist? Is it legible? Is there a
CE marking? Does it specify the year of manufac-
ture?
– Check of all individual parts for mechanical damage
such as: cuts, cracks, indentations, abrasion, forma-
tion of ribs, kinks, crushing.
– Check of al individual parts for thermal or chemical
damage such as: fusing, hardening.
– Check of metal components for corrosion and
deformations.
– Check of condition and completeness of end
connections, stitching (e.g. no abrasion of sewing
thread), splices (e.g. no slippage), knots.
Again, the following rule applies: If there is only
the slightest doubt, the product needs to be retired
or subjected to testing by a competent person.
Writing a rope log is a reliable and safe way to
oversee the durability and performance of your rope.
TEUFELBERGER suggests that all climbers, from
novice to professional, to document the use of ropes.
5. MAINTENANCE
Repairs may be carried out only by the manufacturer.
6. SERVICE LIFE
Only if the rope is rarely used (one week a year)
and stored correctly (see the section on transport,
storage and cleaning) can its useful life be up to 5
years from date of manufacture.
The actual useful life depends solely on the condi-
tion of the product, which in turn is influenced by
various factors (see below). Extreme influences
may shorten service life to a single use only or to
even less if the equipment is damaged prior to its
first use (e.g. in transport).
Mechanical wear and other influences such as the
impact of sunlight will decrease the life span con-
siderably. Bleached or abraded fibres, discoloration,
