Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressors are designed to protect data and communications
equipment against AC transients caused by lightning, electrostatic discharge and ground surges that
can enter equipment from the signal lines or chassis ground.
Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressors described here protect virtually any pieces of net-
worked equipment using 100Base-T, 10Base-T, 10Base-2 and 10Base-5 Ethernet, Token Ring, RS232,
RS422/423/485, parallel, dial-up modems, fax, ISDN, DDS, T-1 and most other communication in-
terfaces.
Installation
1. Make sure the computer, network device or other equipment is logged OFF the network (if appli-
cable). Turn OFF power to the equipment.
2. Disconnect the cable from the equipment to be protected.
3. Connect the Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor directly to the equipment. DB9 and
DB25 models are reversible, to work with male or female ports. To change gender, remove the thumb-
screws, reverse their direction and reinstall.
4. Attach the green ground wire on the surge suppressor directly to the protected equipment's chas-
sis. (Except DB9, DB15 and DB25 models.)
5. Reconnect the cable to the Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor.
The Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor must be properly grounded and positioned as
close as possible to the equipment to be protected. For best results, it is required that the length of the
signal line and ground wire (if equipped) between the surge suppressor and the protected equip-
ment be kept as short as possible, not to exceed 12 inches (12"). It is best to install the surge suppres-
sor directly to the equipment, as noted above.
Installing a typical Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor is equivalent to adding approxi-
mately three feet (3') of typical data communication cable to a segment.
The Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor does not protect the equipment on the opposite
end of the cable. Normally, protection at both ends is recommended.
When properly installed, the Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor will only protect
against surges on the dataline portion of your installation. Simultaneous AC surge suppres-
sion/power protection in the form of an ISOBAR
is strongly recommended for complete system/network protection and can also extend Ulti-
mate Lifetime Insurance coverage to connected equipment.
