Key Components:

3-Position Switches – These switches allow you to select either utility (UTIL) or generator (GEN) as the power source for the circuits
that have been wired through the Gen/Tran transfer switch. The OFF position is not generally used, and a switch in this position will
remove that circuit from both the utility line and generator power.
Circuit Breakers – Each Gen/Tran circuit has a push-to-reset circuit breaker that is active when the Switch is in the GEN position. In
the UTIL position, each circuit is protected by the breaker in the load center.
with 20-amp breakers in the 2-pole circuit positions, C+D and model 30310V is shipped with 20 amp breakers in the bottom four
positions, D, E, I, and J. These circuits MUST be connected to 20 amp circuits in the house panel.)
Wattmeters – Indicate the circuit loads, in watts, when the generator is supplying power. The left meter measures the load on circuits
on the left side (A-B-C), and the right meter measures the load on right circuits (DEF). NOTE: If you are using a generator that
produces 120 volts only, the combined wattage readings on both A and B meters (added together) must not exceed the continuous
wattage rating of the generator.
Handle Tie(s) – For 2-pole, 240 volt applications. On 6-circuit models, the handle tie must be used on C+D circuits ONLY. On 10-
circuit model 30310V, two handle ties are included for use with two 2-pole circuits, D+I and E+J, however, you can wire up to five 2-
pole circuits with additional handle ties. Models 15116V and 30116V can be hardwired for use with 120/240 volt applications.
Handle ties can be ordered by calling 1-888-GEN-TRAN.
Power Inlet – For fast, easy cord connection.
Planning Your Transfer Switch Installation:
1. Determine the appliances, circuits or equipment you want to operate with generator power during a power outage, such as:
Refrigerator/Freezer
Furnace Blower (gas/oil only)
TV / Radio
Lights
2.
Determine the amps required for each appliance by reading the label on the appliance.
3.
Assign the circuit # in the load center and in the Gen/Tran transfer switch, matching the size of the circuit breaker in the load
center to the circuit breaker in the transfer switch. Once you've determined which circuits you want to connect and the
appropriate amperage, you will be ready to begin installing your Gen/Tran transfer switch.
4.
The location of your load center/electrical panel in your home or business will determine where the Gen/Tran transfer switch
needs to be installed. Refer to the typical installation diagrams below. In addition to the transfer switch, you may need
additional accessories to complete your transfer switch installation, such as a generator cord and power inlet box. A generator
cord (sold separately) is needed to connect your generator to the Gen/Tran transfer switch or power inlet box. If your load center
is in your garage, we recommend at least a 25-foot generator
cord to reach from your generator outside the garage on the
driveway to the transfer switch. NEVER run a generator in an
enclosed area! If your load center is in a basement or interior
room, you should install a power inlet box (sold separately) on
the exterior of your house or building to avoid running the
generator cord through a door or window.
5.
Transfer switch can be installed on either the left or right side of
your electrical panel (also called load center). Hold the Gen/Tran
transfer switch up to the wall about 18" from the center of the
load center to ensure adequate room. Remove the cover of the
load center. CAUTION:
MAIN circuit breakers should be turned off to ensure safety.
Remember, all wires on "line" side of main are still hot.
6.
Locate and remove a knockout (KO) in the bottom of the load
center near the center, if possible. Use 3/4" KO for all models.
Insert all wires from Gen/Tran transfer switch at end of flexible
conduit through KO, and install connector securely.
7.
Anchor transfer switch to wall using the external feet. Do not
overbend flexible conduit.
