Operation Instruction & Parts Manual
INSTALLATION
Never pull cable to device to be retracted. Always lift object to hook. If the

hook is accidentally released when it is extended, it will snap back. Hazards or
unsafe practices which COULD result in severe personal injury or death.
Attach full load including all attachments before adjusting tension. Hazards or

Keep this balancer in perfect running condition. The overall load to be balanced must be between
the minimum and the maximum capacity of the selected balancer. Assess the
overall load to be balanced: tools, accessories and parts of pipes or cables
supported by the balancer. To obtain best performance, suspend the balancer at
such a height as to permit using the central part of the cable to travel.
The balancer must be free to align with the cable. If screw fastening devices are
used to connect the balancer, self-locking systems and/or split pins must be used.
Do not lubricate the balancers. Do not remove any labels. Replace any damaged labels.
Be careful when fastening the safety cable, which must be doubled, and the clamp
must secure both sections of the doubled cables. Using the accessories provided,
always connect the safety suspension of the balancer to a suitably sized support –
not the same one to which it is already connected (see figure 1).
Attach a secondary safety cable, or chain, to all reels mounted overhead to prevent
WARNING
reel from falling. Immediate hazards WILL result in severe personal injury or death.
ADJUSTMENTS
When releasing tension, always do so slowly, and with wrench held firmly on
CAUTION
shaft flats. Gloves should be worn when using tension release lever.
Upward adjustment must be made using wrench 30 with
the load suspended. Make sure that operation is correct
with the cable completely wound up. To increase capacity,
turn the bush anticlockwise using wrench 30 (see figure 2).
To reduce the capacity, turn the spring manually
clockwise (see figure 3). During work, cable unwinding
must not be complete, but must stop at least 50 mm
before the lower travel limit. Because it is the tension of
the spring that keeps drum rotation free, the balancer
cannot operate with a load below minimum capacity.
If the drum stops, this is either due to the breaking of the spring after a long period of use, or to
operation with capacity below minimum. If the drum stops with the load in the high part of travel,
proceed as indicated in the paragraph above by increasing the capacity or restricting upward travel by
moving the clamp. If this fails to solve the problem, replace the balancer with a lower-capacity one.
MAINTENANCE
Never open the retractor in order to prevent serious injuries.
WARNING
In any case, always remove all tension before removing mainspring. Spring is
dangerous. Always wear gloves. Hazards or unsafe practices COULD result in
severe personal injury or death.
For correct and safe use, periodically check the condition of the couplings. When the balancer with its
load is installed, make sure operating conditions are correct (sliding movement with minimum effort).
Periodically make sure the parts undergoing stress (hook, cable, balancer suspension components
and tool connections) are safe and not weakened by wear. The balancer does not require
maintenance. If, due to heavy-duty use, repairs have to be done, make sure the drum-spring unit is
unloaded before accessing the inside of the balancer. The spring is the only hazardous component
part. It is contained in the drum and is already lubricated for the life of the tool. The spring-drum
spare is supplied complete and the spring must not be removed for any reason whatsoever. At the
end of its working life, the balancer must be disposed of or recycled in accordance with applicable
regulations. The use of non-original spares could cause a safety hazard, a drop in performance
levels, increased maintenance and void the warranty.
