4 Preparing Soil Moisture Sensor for Operation

Clothing and Equipment

WARNING
■ The user can be cut by sharp edges while handling the soil
moisture sensor. This can result in personal injury.
► Wear work gloves made of durable material.
3.3

Safe Condition

The soil moisture sensor is in a safe condition if it is not
damaged.
WARNING
■ If components do not comply with safety requirements,
they will no longer function properly and safety devices
may be rendered inoperative. This can result in serious or
fatal injuries.
► Always use an undamaged soil moisture sensor.
► Never use a hammer to drive the sensor into hard soil.
► Do not modify the soil moisture sensor.
► If you have any queries: Contact your STIHL servicing
dealer for assistance.
4 Preparing Soil Moisture Sensor for
Operation
4.1

Burying and Connecting Up the Soil Moisture

► If the soil is hard: Use a suitable tool to loosen the soil or
soften it with water.

► Bury the soil moisture sensor by hand and check the
following points:
– Sensor is completely buried. Do not slush the soil
around the sensor.
– Soil must be pressed firmly against the sensor.
– Bury the sensor at a depth that about the same level as
the plant roots.
– If the sensor is buried in a plant pot: Make sure the plant
pot has a volume of at least 1 liter and the sensor is
buried at a distance of at least 5 cm from the side.
– The cable has been extended to no more than 100 m.
STIHL recommends burying the sensor horizontally with its
blade upright.
► Disconnect mains plug of controller to which the soil
moisture sensor is to be connected.
► Hook up wires of cable to an irrigation controller in
accordance with the specified terminal assignment,
@ 2.2.
The ability to process the measurement signals depends
on the irrigation controller to which the sensor is
connected.
4.2

Extending the Cable

The cable can be extended to a length of no more than 100
m with an extension cable and a junction box with an IP68
rating.
The extension cable must meet the following specifications:
– No. of wires: 3 (or, if temperature sensor is connected: 4)
