Check local ordinances and regulations before building your pergola.
If mounting posts to the surface, determine the local guidelines and
approved fasteners for doing so. Before digging any holes, contact your
local utility companies to mark any underground cables and pipelines.
Design and Layout
STEP 1
Determine the desired height of your pergola and your method for
securing the posts. The standard pergola height is 8 ft. The posts are
12 ft. tall. If you are securing the posts by mounting to the surface, you
may need to cut the posts to your desired height.
STEP 2
Note: Post placement
needs to be precise.
Mark post placement by
building a square of the
outside beams and joists on
the ground in your desired
location. To do so, place
two joists on the ground
approximately 10 ft. apart.
Slide one beam onto the
joists, matching the outer-
most notches in the joists
with the outermost notches
in the beams. Repeat on the
other side, completing the
square (fig. 1).
STEP 3
The posts will be located in
each corner of the square
(fig. 2). Mark post placement
with stakes or spray paint.
Take apart the square.
