STEP 6
Follow the instructions in step 5 to temporarily attach a second beam
on the opposite side of the posts (fig. 4).

Check for level between both beams and correct if necessary. Drill 2
holes through each post/beam connection using a ½ in. drill bit (be sure
they are centered horizontally on the post) (fig. 5). Insert a carriage bolt
into each hole and secure it with the shoulder (fig. 5).

STEP 7
Attach the remaining two beams to the remaining posts following steps
5 and 6.
STEP 8
Slide the joists on top of the beams, notch side down. The notches in
the joists will slide into the notches in the beams (fig. 6). Toenail the joist
to the beam at each connection, one nail on each side.

STEP 9
Carefully trim the top of any posts that extend above the joists to
create a level surface for the rafters. Place the 2x4 rafters on the top
of the joists at your desired spacing (fig. 6). For equal spacing, leave
a 2.6 in. gap between each rafter. Secure each rafter to the joists with
wood screws (1 per joist/rafter connection).

STEP 10
To stabilize the pergola, add 4x6 braces between each post and beam or
joist. Measure the two inside faces of each post 61-5/8 in. from the ground
and mark. Place the bottom of the brace against the mark and the top of
the brace against the inside of the outermost joist or beam. Attach the
brace to the post by driving three wood screws through the brace into the
post. Attach the brace to the joist or beam in the same fashion. Repeat
until all 8 braces are in place (fig. 7).
