Installation and Operating Instructions
FLUSH MOUNTING PLATE MODEL 6383
®
WARNING: Generac
transfer switches should be installed by a professional electrician familiar with electrical wiring and codes, and experienced in working with generators. Generac
accepts no responsibility for accidents, damages or personal injury caused by incorrect installation. This transfer switch is intended for surface mounting INDOORS only. Our transfer
switches are UL listed to UL 1008 and meet the criteria of National Electrical code Article 702.6 for Optional Standby Systems. CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING: Engine
exhaust and some of its constituents are known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm. This product may contain or emit chemicals
known to cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm.
This Flush Mount Plate is designed for flush mounting
transfer switch models 6294, 6376, and 6408 in a finished
wall in the center of the space adjacent to the existing
Load Center. This Flush Mounting Plate must be attached
to the transfer switch at the same time as installation.
Tools and Items Needed for Installation:
1/4" nut driver, 2" or 2-1/8" hole saw
Stud Finder
Screwdrivers, straight blade and Phillips
Electric drill, drill bits, wallboard saw or utility knife
Safety eye goggles
Anchors or screws to mount transfer switch to wall studs
Installation Procedure:
1) This Flush Mount Plate is designed to mount to the two studs immediately adjacent to the existing load center, typically installed at 16" on center. Use
a stud finder device to determine if the space between the studs is different than 16"on center. If so, additional holes may need to be drilled into the flush
plate to accommodate the extra distance, or some form of anchoring to the drywall will be required.
2) Determine how the transfer switch will be connected to the generator during an outage -- either with
a power cord plugged into the front of the transfer switch OR hardwired to a Power Inlet Box (sold
separately) mounted on the exterior of the house or building. If you will be hardwiring to a power inlet
box and for ease in installing the transfer switch with this flush mounting plate, we recommend that the
1/2" knockout (KO) located on the left side next to the flanged power inlet be used for hardwiring to the
Power Inlet Box outside.
3) Remove the cover of the load center and set aside. CAUTION: The wires ahead of the MAIN
BREAKER are still HOT, and could cause serious injury or death if not handled properly. Use extreme
caution when touching wires inside a LIVE load center. Locate a 1" knockout on the lower side of the
load center where the flexible conduit from the transfer switch will enter. Drill a 1/4" hole through the
center of the 1" knockout in the load center AND through the wall stud. See Figure 1.
4) Snap the flexible conduit into the bottom of the transfer switch, hold the assembly onto the wall
where it will be mounted, and mark the wall with a line around the perimeter of the transfer switch box (NOT the
flush plate). See photos at right.
5) Remove the four cover screws on the transfer switch (2 on top and 2 on bottom). Place the Flush Mount Plate
over the transfer switch and attach it to the transfer switch using the four screws just removed.
6) Set aside the transfer switch. Draw a larger box on the wall that is 1/2" larger on the top and bottom and 1"
larger on the sides. This is to allow more room when placing the transfer switch in the wall. Before cutting, be
sure that no wires or pipes are inside the wall space where you intend to install the transfer switch. Then cut out
the larger box using a wallboard saw or utility knife.
7) Reach down inside the wall to find the 1/4" hole in the stud that was drilled in Step 3. With an electric drill and
a 2" hole saw (approximate), drill back through the hole in the stud, making sure not to drill through the wall of
the load center. Then remove the 1" KO from the Load Center.
8) If the transfer switch is being hard-wired to a Power Inlet Box, run the cable for hardwiring into this cavity at
this time, and connect it to the transfer switch.
