TOOLS REQUIRED:
• MST149 Sheppard Pitman Arm Puller
• Appropriate size hex socket for steering gear model
• Impact Wrench
• 15/16" Impact Socket
• Punch
• Hammer
• Chassis Grease
Note:
The easiest way to remove the Sheppard pitman arm is while the steering
gear assembly is mounted to the vehicle. The Spacer Pucks are only required when
pulling the smaller style Sheppard pitman arms.
1.
Park the vehicle and secure it for service according to the manufacturer's
directions.
2.
Disconnect the drag link from the pitman arm following the manufacturer's
directions.
3A. (Short Shaft) Use the punch to bend the restraining tabs out of the notches in
the pitman arm retainer.
3B. Use the appropriate size socket to remove the pinch bolt from the pitman arm
retainer nut.
4.
Do not bend the tabs that are in the two slots machined into the pitman arm.
5.
Remove the pitman arm retainer using the appropriate size hex drive socket
and impact wrench.
6.
Apply a light amount of chassis grease to the ball end of the Actuator Tip and
the threads of the Jack Screw on the MST149.
7.
Slide the MST149 Puller over the end of the pitman arm, far enough that the
Actuator Tip is centered over the end of the sector shaft.
8.
Be sure the Actuator Tip is centered squarely on the sector shaft. (NOTE:
Damage may result to the puller if the Actuator Tip is not aligned properly.)
9.
If you are pulling a narrow arm, be sure that the Spacer Pucks are installed and
make contact with the landing pads on the pitman arm.
10.
Tighten the Jack Screw with the impact wrench and remove the pitman arm.
WARNING:
Research has shown that most Sheppard pitman arms are extremely
tight. Never apply heat to the pitman arm or steering gear. Doing this will cause
damage to the pitman arm, sector shaft and seals.
CAUTION:
The pitman arm removes with great force and a loud bang may occur
when the arm breaks free from the sector shaft. Be sure to exercise extreme caution
when using this remover tool. Always wear protective safety glasses or a face shield.
