Important Notes
Please read before installing.
1. To avoid overheating and possible damage to other equipment, do
not use to control receptacles, fluorescent lighting fixtures, motor-
operated or transformer-supplied appliances, or electronic
low-voltage lighting fixtures.
2. Operating a dimmed low-voltage circuit with all lamps inoperative
or removed may result in current flow in excess of normal levels.
To avoid possible transformer overheating or failure, Lutron
strongly recommends the following:
•Do not operate without operative lamps in place.
•Replace burned out lamps as soon as possible.
•To prevent premature failure due to overcurrent, use transformers
with thermal protection or fused primary transformer windings.
3. Install in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
4. When no "grounding means" exist within the wallbox then the NEC
2008, Article 404.9 allows a dimmer without a grounding connection to
be installed as a replacement, as long as a plastic, noncombustible
wallplate is used. For this type of installation, cap or remove the green
ground wire on the dimmer and use an appropriate wallplate such as
Fassada series wallplates by Lutron.

5. Do not paint Smart Dimmers.
6. Do not use where total lamp wattage is less than 40 W / VA or greater
than wattage indicated on unit label.
7. Dimmer may not work with dioded lamps (Sylvania Designer 16 or
TM
Philips PAR-16).

8. Operate between 32 °F (0 °C) and 104 °F (40 °C).
9. Smart Dimmer may feel warm to the touch during normal operation.
10. Recommended wallbox depth is 2 / in (64 mm) minimum.

11. Clean dimmers with a soft damp cloth only . Do not use any chemical
cleaners.
Multigang Installations
When combining controls in the same wallbox, remove all inner side sections
prior to wiring (see below). Using pliers, bend side sections up and down
until they break off. Repeat for each side section to be removed. Reduction of
Dimmer capacity is also required. Refer to the derating chart below for maxi-
mum Dimmer capacity.

Turning OFF Power
• Turn power OFF at circuit breaker (or remove fuse).
WARNING: Before proceeding,
verify that power to the switch is
OFF. Otherwise, death or serious
injury could result.

Removing Wallplate and Switch
• Remove the wallplate and switch mounting screws.
• Carefully remove switch from wall (do not remove wires).
Turn screws to
loosen.

When making wire connections, follow the recommended strip lengths and
combinations for the supplied wire connector below. Note: Wire connectors
provided are suitable for copper wire only. For aluminum wire, consult an
electrician.
Recommended strip lengths:
Small:
Strip insulation 3/8 in (10 mm) for
14 AWG (1.5 mm 2 ) wire.
Strip insulation 1/2 in (13 mm) for
16 AWG (1.0 mm ) or 18 AWG

(0.75 mm 2 ) wire.
Use to join one 14 AWG (1.5 mm 2 ) supply
wire with one 16 AWG (1.0 mm 2 ) or
18 AWG (0.75 mm 2 ) control wire.
Large:

10 AWG (6 mm ), 12 AWG (2.5 mm ), or

Operation
Basic Operation
Tap Button Options
• Tap once when unit is off - Lights
brighten smoothly to preset intensity.
• Tap once when unit is on - Lights
dim smoothly to off.
• Tap twice quickly - Lights brighten
rapidly to full intensity.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
FASS - Front Accessible Service Switch - To replace bulb, power may be
conveniently removed by pulling FASS switch out. For any procedure
other than routine lamp replacement, power must be disconnected
at the main electrical panel.

Depending on model number, the
dimmer may include a Lutron
Fassada wallplate. If so, please

remove the front piece of the
wallplate from the adapter before
installing. This will expose dimmer
mounting holes and prevent wallplate
damage while installing dimmer.
4 Wiring the Smart Dimmer

refer to Multigang Installations before beginning.

Advanced Features
Fade to Off -
Dimming Press and hold to activate
delayed fade to OFF. As tap button is held, LEDs

will begin to flash. The first flashing LED represents a
10 second fade to OFF. Each additional flashing LED
represents 15 seconds of delay before dimmer fades
Press to brighten
to OFF (up to 60 seconds).
Press to dim
Locked-In Preset -
Tap 4 times quickly to
set the current light level as the "Locked-in" preset
(the LEDs will blink twice indicating the preset was
locked). When the dimmer is turned ON via this but-
ton it will always go to this "Locked-in" light level
rather than the previous light level. To unlock the
preset, tap the button 4 times quickly (the LEDs will
blink three times indicating the preset was
unlocked).

Turning Power ON
• Turn power ON at circuit breaker (or replace fuse).

Possible Cause
• Front Accessible Service Switch ( FASS ) on Dimmer is
pulled out.
• Light bulb(s) burned out.
• Breaker is off or tripped.
• Wiring error. Call Lutron Technical Support Center at

• Load is less than 40 W.
