4. HEARTH INSTALLATION
Remove the screws that hold the hearth to the pallet.
PREPARING THE EXISTING EMPLACEMENT
Remove any combustible or heat-degradable materials on or
inside the fireplace (floor, sides, back and top) (Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4,
Z5), depending on the chosen layout.
FLOOR
Make sure that the floor (Z3) can support the total load of the
hearth and the cladding. Otherwise, install a suitable device
(load distribution plate). To make maintenance easier, it is best
to lay tiles (for example) in the load area (Z5).
WALLS
Remove any coverings (wallpaper, panels, etc.) from the area
of the future fireplace. Depending on the material of the wall,
apply the recommended solutions.
CAUTION. Do not place combustible objects
and/or materials within 2m of the glass.
TOP
In the area where the hood will be installed (Z4), remove any
non-M0 (non-combustible) materials and insulate with rigid
mineral wool.
EXTRACTING COMBUSTION PRODUCTS
If there is a flue pipe, check that the duct is compatible with the
hearth being installed, as well as the size of the duct so that it can
be marked. Check the condition of the flue (stability, seal, material
compatibility, section, etc.); (in France; NF-DTU 24.1). If the flue is
not compatible (old, cracked, clogged) it will be necessary to fit:
- a casing made of technically appropriate material,
- or a jacket
- or a new, adapted flue, made by a company that holds the
necessary permits.
EXISTING MATERIALS
Exterior wall clad with
flammable insulation.
Uninsulated external wall or non-
flammable partition wall (approx.
15cm thick).
Lightweight plaster, wood,
plasterboard, polystyrene,
polyurethane, honeycomb
partitions.
For corner installation
25 cm Minimum
ZONE 1
RECOMMENDED SOLUTION
- Cut away existing insulation
- Build a replacement M0
reinforcement wall
- Special insulation
- Special insulation
- Remove and build a 10 cm thick
wall or,
- Do not remove and build a 10 cm
thick wall in front with a 2 cm air gap
or,
- Remove and build a new
supporting wall hard + insulation
THROUGH CEILINGS AND FLOORS
As per current regulations, flues have to be fitted at a minimum
distance between the inner wall of the flue and the closest
ignitable element (in France; NF-DTU 24.1)
COMBUSTION AIR
Fresh air is essential for good combustion in the hearth. Fresh air
consumption of approximately 40m
CMV type ventilation systems, centralised vacuum systems or
kitchen extractor hoods, may interfere with the operation of the
hearth.
Prioritise a direct combustion air supply connected to the outside.
An indirect (unconnected) combustion air supply in the room is
also allowed.
Respect the following recommendations.
Unconnected combustion air
Should the combustion air not be connected directly to the
outside via a duct, then the room must have a permanent
supply of fresh air but without it disturbing the occupants.
The outdoor air intake should face the prevailing winds and have a
minimum section of 1.2 dm², or open into ventilated crawl-space.
The section in cm² of the ventilation grille for the ventilation
chamber must be at least equal to 5 times the surface in m² of the
ventilation chamber.
A permanent outdoor air intake is not necessary if the room is
equipped with a sweep ventilation system, as long as the
supplementary air flow consumed by the appliance while
operating is taken into account (applicable in France under
Decree 24 March, 1982 - articles 8 and 11).
Connected combustion air - attaching the collar
When it is possible to connect the combustion air, prepare the air
supply duct leading to the fireplace. This should have a maximum
length of 2 m, follow the most direct route (otherwise the supply
of air may be insufficient), and end facing prevailing winds or a
technical vacuum. If a grille is used, ensure a minimum free
2
section of 1.2 dm
. Attach the supplied air connection collar to the
hearth (specific instructions).
