Storage
Follow these guidelines when storing the edger for
longer than 30 days.
Edger
x Completely clean the edger.
x Check the edger for worn or damaged parts.
Tighten all loose hardware.
x Apply a small amount of engine oil to all moving
parts, particularly the wheels.
x Put the edger in a building that has good
ventilation.
x Never store the edger with fuel in the fuel tank
inside a building where fumes may reach an open
flame or spark, or in a confined space such as a
car trunk.
x Store the Edger in the operating position with the
wheels down. If the Edger is stored in any other
position, oil from the crankcase will enter the
cylinder and cause a service problem.
x Cover the edger with a suitable protective cover
that does not retain moisture. Do not use plastic.
Never cover the edger while the engine and
exhaust areas are still warm as this can cause a
fire.
Engine
x If no fuel stabilizer is used, then either drain the
gasoline from the engine or let the engine run until
it is out of gasoline.
x If fuel stabilizer is used, you do not need to drain
gasoline prior to storage. See "Fuel Stabilizer"
section.
x While the engine is still warm, change the engine
oil. See "How To Change The Oil" in the
Maintenance section.
x Lubricate the piston / cylinder area. This can be
done by first removing the spark plug and pouring
1/2 ounce (15 ml.) of clean engine oil into the spark
plug hole. Then, install the spark plug.
x Slowly pull the starter rope. This will turn the
engine's crankshaft and distribute oil slowly through
the engine.
Fuel stabilizer
x If you do not want to remove the gasoline, add a
fuel stabilizer to any gasoline left in the fuel tank. A
fuel stabilizer will minimize gum deposits and acids.
If the fuel tank is almost empty, mix the fuel
stabilizer with fresh gasoline in a separate
container and add the mixture to the fuel tank.
Always follow the instructions on the stabilizer
container. Start the engine. Let the engine run for 3
minutes to allow the mixture to reach the
carburetor.
Gasoline and its vapors are
extremely flammable and explosive.
Fire or explosion can cause severe
burns or death.
When Storing Gasoline Or Equipment With
Fuel In Tank
x Store away from furnaces, stoves, water
heaters or other appliances that have pilot
light or other ignition source because they can
ignite gasoline vapors.
x Do not remove gasoline while inside a
building, near a fire, or while you smoke.
Gasoline fumes can cause an explosion or a
fire.
x Never cover the edger while the engine and
exhaust areas are still warm as this may
cause a fire.
