Inclinometer
The inclinometer is useful to measure the local inclination of the magnetic
field and also for the representation of the magnetic field of a current.
To demonstrate the earth´s magnetic field and to illustrate the thumb rule.
It consists of an aluminum ring with a double pointed needle pivoting in the
center, the ring is graduated from 0-360º in both clockwise and
anticlockwise directions. The whole assembly is fitted on an aluminium
pillar and mounted on a plastic base of approx. 142x80x40 mm
Use
Cautions
-
Protect the device from humidity, dust and mechanical blows.
-
Do not touch the magnetic needle.
The geometry of the lines of the Earth's magnetic field is strongly changed
by static magnetic changes, steel frames on laboratory tables and
installations, steel beams on the floor, ceilings and building walls. For this
reason you can not avoid having deviations in the angles to expect.
Measure
The needle is oriented along the direction of the actual course of the Earth's
magnetic field lines. With the scale plane horizontally, the blue side of the
needle is oriented in a northerly direction, the needle is oriented so that it
is at 0 ° (blue side of the needle shows north direction).

Then, the fork is turned 90 ° (vertical plane of the scale). The magnetic
needle tilts with the blue side facing down.
The deviation of the magnetic needle from the horizontal is called a tilt.
This is the different depending on place, in the northern parallel of Europe
approx 50º is between 63º and 68º.
Magnetic effect of an electric current
For the realization of the experiment an adjustable DC source is additionally
required.
Taking the scale plane horizontally, the blue side of the needle should be
oriented so that is at 0º (blue side of the needle shows north).
The connecting bushes are connected to an adjustable DC source as the
current increases the magnetic needle experiences an additional deviation.
Changing the polarity of the source changes the direction of the deviation.
