01 Field of Application
The refractometer type R1 is a high-precision optical
instrument for measuring the concentration of coo-
lant via the refractive index (brix value) in a range of
0 – 10%. The automatic temperature compensation
in a range of +10 to +30 °C is integrated. The device
is accurate also with very small sample amounts
and the compact and lightweight construction
makes it ideal for universal use. Please note that
water contaminated by glass grinding dust will
distort the refractive index. Accurate measurements
can only be obtained when using fresh coolant
water or when the water has been cleaned with
Bohle Sedimentor systems, for example. Before
doing a measurement, you can manually clean 1
litre of contaminated grinding water by using 1 cap-
ful of Bohle Sediflock 310 (BO 50 028311).

Description
03 Instructions
3.1 Adjustment
(Device is pre-set, zero marking = water line)
Setting the water line (only required when there
are deviations)
After the hinged cover and prism have been careful-
ly cleaned, apply 1 – 2 drops of water to the prism.
Close the cover with gentle pressure. With the adju-
sting screw 3, set the light/dark line to the water
line. Dry the prism with a soft (cotton) cloth. As a
test, apply 1-2 drops of the sample liquid to the
prism. After measuring, carefully clean and dry the
prism.
3.2 Measuring Procedure
After having carefully cleaned the hinged cover and
prism, apply 1-2 drops of water using the supplied
plastic phial. When you close the cover, the sample
liquid will spread uniformly. Aiming towards a bright
background, look through the eyepiece of the refrac-
tometer and focus the scale. Read the value at the
light/dark line.

04 Maintenance and General
Information
The device is maintenance-free except for above
described cleaning after each measurement.
I
Adjustment of the water line should be done at
+20 °C. Subsequent measurements are
temperature-compensated in a temperature
range of +10 to +30 °C.
