The Apodization Filter
The built-in apodization fi lter progressively reduces transmittance from the center of
the aperture outwards. The area in focus appears in high resolution as always, but the
gradations in the defocused areas create bokeh with a beautiful melting eff ect. The
eff ective aperture (f-number) due to the reduction in transmittance is shown by the
red numbers on the aperture ring; the strength of the eff ect can be judged by the
diff erence between the actual and eff ective apertures. The most striking eff ects are
achieved at wide apertures (low f-numbers); to keep exposure in the supported range
when shooting outdoors, use the ND8 neutral density (ND) fi lter, which reduces the
brightness (and only the brightness) of the light entering the camera to an eighth of
its actual value, an amount equivalent
to three aperture stops. Users of cam-
eras with phase-detection autofocus
should note that contrast-detect AF
will be used due to the presence of the
built-in apodization fi lter.
